Plano Waste Collection — Quick Facts
The City of Plano’s Environmental Waste Services (EWS) division handles all residential solid waste for single-family homes within Plano city limits. Collection runs Monday through Thursday only — no Friday residential routes. Plano uses a geographic zone system based on major roadways to assign collection days. Recycling (green cart) is every other week on the same day as your trash, in either Orange Week or Purple Week rotation.
Plano Trash, Recycling & Yard Trimmings — How It Works
Plano runs three distinct curbside services, each with its own schedule logic. Trash and yard trimmings share the same weekly collection day. Recycling shares that day but only every other week (Orange or Purple rotation). Bulky waste runs monthly on a separately assigned day. None of these share the same calendar — use separate official 2026 PDFs for each from Plano.gov/630.
Trash Cart
All non-recyclable, non-organic household waste. Weekly on your assigned zone day. Out by 7 a.m.
Weekly • Mon–ThuGreen Cart — Recycling
The Big 3: Plastics #1, #2, #5; Paper & Cardboard; Tin & Aluminum. Loose, clean, dry. Every other week (Orange or Purple).
Every Other Week • Same DayYard Trimmings
Weekly curbside. Large brown paper bags or loose piles. Same day as trash. No plastic bags. Large cardboard goes here too — flattened next to the pile.
Weekly • Same Day as Trash⏰ Cart & Pile Placement Rules
- Place carts at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day. Do not set out earlier than 6:00 p.m. the evening before.
- Position carts with wheels toward the house, handles toward the street.
- Keep carts at least 3 feet apart from each other and from obstacles. Do not block sidewalks, driveways, or mailboxes.
- Remove empty carts from the curb by the end of collection day.
- Yard trimmings and extra cardboard: place within 2 feet of the curb or alley, visible from the street.
- Yard trimming piles must not exceed 6 ft × 4 ft × 4 ft. Larger piles require a Special Paid Collection.
Plano Holiday Trash Collection Schedule 2026
Plano’s holiday rule: if your regular collection day falls on or after a city-observed holiday, it slides forward one day that week. Collection days before the holiday are not affected. Holidays falling on the weekend do not delay any weekday collection. EWS publishes separate 2026 calendars for trash/yard trimmings, recycling, and bulky waste that show exactly which days shift — always verify at Plano.gov/EWS.
| Holiday | 2026 Date | Impact | What Happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year’s Day | Thu, Jan 1 | 1-Day Slide | Thu route slides to Fri. Mon–Wed routes unaffected. No yard trimmings collection Dec 28–31 (end of 2025 holiday period). |
| Memorial Day | Mon, May 25 | 1-Day Slide | Mon slides to Tue; Tue slides to Wed; Wed slides to Thu; Thu slides to Fri that week. |
| Independence Day | Sat, Jul 4 | Normal | Falls on Saturday — no weekday impact. All routes normal. |
| Labor Day | Mon, Sep 7 | 1-Day Slide | Mon slides to Tue; Tue slides to Wed; Wed slides to Thu; Thu slides to Fri that week. |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thu, Nov 26 | 1-Day Slide | Thu slides to Fri. Mon–Wed routes normal. Verify no additional Thanksgiving-week impacts at Plano.gov/EWS. |
| Christmas Eve | Thu, Dec 24 | Check Official | Observed when it falls on a weekday. In 2026, Dec 24 is Thursday — verify with EWS whether this causes a delay. Thu may slide to Fri. |
| Christmas Day | Fri, Dec 25 | Normal (Fri) | Falls on Friday. EWS runs Mon–Thu only, so Christmas on Friday has no direct route impact. Verify Dec 24 impact above. |
Plano Recycling — Green Cart, Every Other Week
Plano uses green carts for single-stream recycling, collected every other week on the same day as your trash. Your address is on either Orange Week or Purple Week — find your week in the official 2026 recycling calendar PDF at plano.gov. Plano focuses on the “Big 3”: Plastics #1, #2, and #5; Paper & Cardboard; and Tin & Aluminum cans.
📌 Preparing Your Recyclables: Empty. Clean. Dry.
- Empty: All food or product residue goes in the trash or down the drain. No leftover ketchup, mustard, or other contents.
- Clean: Rinse containers after emptying. If a container cannot be cleaned, put it in the trash to avoid contaminating the rest.
- Dry: Items should be dry before going in the green cart.
- Loose: Never bag recyclables. Items in black trash bags go straight to the landfill — workers assume it’s trash.
✅ Accepted in the Green Cart (The Big 3)
- Plastics #1, #2, and #5 — bottles, jugs, containers (check the number in the recycling triangle on the bottom)
- Paper: newspaper, office paper, cardboard, magazines, mail
- Cardboard: flatten small boxes and place in cart; flatten large boxes and set next to yard trimmings visible from collection point
- Tin and aluminum cans — soup cans, soda cans, steel cans; rinsed, labels OK; no need to remove labels
- Glass (bottles and jars — food and beverage only, rinsed)
🚫 Not Accepted in the Green Cart
- Shredded paper — no longer accepted; recycle at community Saturday events
- Plastic bags or film → grocery store drop-off
- Plastics #3, #4, #6, #7 (styrofoam, PVC, etc.)
- Food-soiled containers that cannot be cleaned → trash
- Electronics → Saturday recycling events
- Batteries → Saturday recycling events or retail drop-off
- Textiles/clothing → Saturday recycling events
- Bagged recyclables (black bags) → go to landfill
- Household chemicals → EWS Household Chemical Collection
Plano Yard Trimmings Collection — Weekly, Same Day as Trash
Plano provides weekly curbside yard trimmings collection on the same day as your trash. Yard trimmings include grass clippings, leaves, branches, and plants — but NOT treated or painted wood. Use large brown paper yard waste bags or create a loose pile. No plastic bags accepted. Note: yard trimmings are NOT collected December 28–31 annually.
✅ Accepted as Yard Trimmings
- Grass clippings
- Leaves and garden trimmings
- Branches (bagged or bundled)
- Plants, shrubs (cut and bundled)
- Large cardboard (flattened, placed next to pile)
- Piles max 6′ × 4′ × 4′
- Brown paper yard waste bags (large)
🚫 Not Accepted as Yard Trimmings
- Plastic bags → never use for yard waste
- Dirt, soil, or sod → direct-haul to NTMWD
- Treated, painted, or stained lumber
- Wood with plastic, Formica, or creosote → monthly bulky waste
- Piles over 6′ × 4′ × 4′ → Special Paid Collection
- No yard trimmings Dec 28–31 annually
🌿 Yard Trimmings → Texas Pure Compost
Plano’s yard trimmings are processed by Texas Pure Products into compost and organic mulch. This keeps organic material out of the landfill and returns nutrients to the soil. Large cardboard boxes flattened and placed next to yard trimmings on collection day are also collected and processed into this compost program.
Plano Bulky Waste Collection — Monthly, Assigned Week by Zone
Plano provides one free curbside bulky waste collection per month. Each address is assigned a specific week of the month (Week 1–4) for bulky collection, based on location. The city is divided into four color-coded collection weeks on the official 2026 Bulky Waste Calendar and Map PDF. You must schedule at least 2 working days in advance by calling (972) 941-7141 or submitting an online request.
📅 How to Schedule Bulky Waste Pickup
- Find your assigned bulky waste week using the 2026 Bulky Waste Collection Calendar and Map PDF at plano.gov/630, or call EWS at 972-769-4150 to confirm your assigned week.

Plano Household Chemical Collection — Free Curbside by Appointment
Plano is one of the few Texas cities that offers free curbside household chemical pickup. You do not need to drive to a facility — EWS comes to your home. Call 972-769-4150 or submit an online request to schedule. Collections are planned by ZIP code and a specific date is given when you call. You also need proof of Plano residence (utility bill or lease agreement).
🔥 How Household Chemical Collection Works
- Call 972-769-4150 or use the online form at plano.gov to schedule a Household Chemical Collection (HCC). Collections are scheduled by ZIP code — you’ll receive a specific pickup date.
- Place your items in a clearly labeled cardboard box marked “HCC” by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled day. Each box must weigh less than 50 pounds.
- Place the HCC box at least 2 feet away from your regular trash and recycling carts. Keep labels visible and containers upright to prevent leaks or mixing.
- Do not place any HCC items directly in your trash or recycling — liquid paint in carts is illegal under Texas Health & Safety Code §365.012.
✅ Accepted at HCC Pickup
Paint (latex and oil-based), varnishes, stains, thinners, pool chemicals, gasoline, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, motor oil, antifreeze, fluorescent bulbs, cleaning chemicals, and solvents.
🍁 Household Chemical Reuse Center
At 4110 W. Plano Parkway, usable chemicals collected from residents are available free to Plano residents. Open year-round Wednesdays 11am–1pm; March–November Saturdays 9–11am; December–February 3rd Saturday only 9–11am. No drop-offs accepted — pickup only from scheduled collections.
🆗 Latex Paint: DIY Disposal
For small amounts of latex paint, remove the lid and let it dry in a well-ventilated area, or use a paint hardener (cat litter, Paint Hardener product, or Plaster of Paris). Once fully hardened and dry, place the can in your regular trash with the lid off. Empty paint cans can go directly in trash.
🔍 Dallas County HHW Center
Plano residents can also use the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Rd, Dallas. Bring a Plano water bill as proof of residency. This is an alternative to the curbside EWS program.

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Plano
- Confirm your collection day and recycling week. Use the interactive map at Plano.gov/EWS or call 972-769-4150. Confirm whether this was your Orange or Purple recycling week. Remember: trash and yard trimmings are weekly; recycling is every other week.
- Check for a holiday delay. If a city-observed holiday fell on or before your collection day that week, your collection slides one day forward. Check plano.gov/CollectionReminder for holiday week notifications.
- Verify placement: Carts must be out by 7 a.m., wheels toward house, handles toward street, 3 feet from obstacles. Yard trimmings within 2 feet of curb, pile no larger than 6′×4′×4′.
- Report the missed pickup by calling 972-769-4150 or emailing EWSCustomerService@Plano.gov. For commercial properties served by Republic Services, call 972-316-0789.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Plano Residents Make
- Putting recyclables in black plastic bags — workers assume it’s trash and it goes directly to the landfill. Always place recyclables loose in the green cart.
- Confusing the trash day with the recycling week — recycling is every other week, not every week. Use the official 2026 recycling calendar to confirm your Orange or Purple week.
- Putting yard trimmings in plastic bags — only brown paper yard waste bags or loose piles are accepted. Plastic bags mean the materials cannot be composted.
- Setting out bulky waste without scheduling 2 working days ahead — unscheduled bulky items will not be collected and may result in a notice.
- Including shredded paper in the green recycling cart — shredded paper is no longer accepted curbside; take it to the 2nd or 3rd Saturday community recycling events.
📱 Use the Reminder System
Plano’s Collection Reminder tool sends you a text or email alert the day before each collection. This is the easiest way to never miss your trash day, know which recycling week it is, and get notified of holiday week changes. Enter your house number, select your address, choose alert type (text, email, or both), and set alert time (4, 5, 6, or 7 p.m.). Setup takes two minutes.
