Recycling — Blue Container

Chandler Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Container

Chandler provides a single-stream blue recycling container collected weekly on a separate day from your trash. Items must be clean, dry, and placed loosely — never bagged. Recycling items smaller than 2 inches in length or diameter are not accepted. Use the Recycle Coach app for full recycling guidance and reminders.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Container

  • Paper: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, notebooks (remove spiral/plastic), white and colored paper, cardstock, paper sacks (remove ribbon), mail and envelopes (non-padded), paperback books
  • Cardboard: flattened cartons (milk, juice, broth), cereal/pasta/cracker boxes, shoe boxes, moving boxes, paper towel/TP tubes, pizza boxes (not soiled), cardboard egg cartons
  • Plastic bottles & containers: food containers (dairy, berries, to-go boxes), bottles (water, soda, shampoo, soap), jugs (detergent, milk, juice) — lids attached to original container only
  • Metal: aluminum cans, clean foil and pie pans, steel/tin cans, empty aerosol cans
  • Glass: beverage bottles (all colors), food jars (labels OK)

🚫 Never in the Blue Container

  • Shredded paper (bagged or loose)
  • Gift wrap, gift bags, tissue paper
  • Padded or shipping envelopes
  • Paper plates, napkins, paper towels, facial tissue
  • Pet food bags
  • Dirty or greasy cardboard; paper cups
  • Plastic bags, packing pillows, film wrap → grocery store drop-off
  • Foam cups, to-go containers, packing foam
  • Cans with paint, pesticides, or hazardous materials
  • Wire hangers or other metal items
  • Mirrors, windows, drinking glasses, plates, non-food/beverage glass
  • Glass container lids (too small or mixed materials)
  • Any item smaller than 2 inches in length or diameter
💡 Unique to Chandler: Recycling is collected weekly — not every other week as in most US cities. This is a significant advantage. Lids are accepted only when attached to the original container. Items smaller than 2 inches cannot be processed by recycling equipment and should go in the trash.

Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Chandler

  1. Check your neighbors’ cans first. If the truck hasn’t been by yet, leave your container at the curb and wait. If your can was the only one not collected after neighbors’ cans were emptied, call customer service early the next business day. (For Friday, call by 3 p.m.)
  2. Verify your collection day and zone. Use the zone finder above, the Recycle Coach app, or Chandler’s InfoMap to confirm your exact trash day and recycling day. Remember: they are different days in Chandler.
  3. Check for a holiday delay. Only Thanksgiving and Christmas cause delays. On those days, Thursday shifts to Friday and Friday to Saturday.
  4. Verify container placement: Can must be in the street against the curb (not on the sidewalk), lid closed, 3 feet from all obstacles, and everything inside the can. Items placed beside or on top of the can are not collected.
  5. Report the missed collection by calling 480-782-3510 (Mon–Fri 8am–5pm) or emailing solidwaste.customerservice@chandleraz.gov. Missed collections are verified through GPS tracking and container inspections.
Local Tips

Chandler Trash & Recycling Tips Every Resident Should Know

🏠 New to Chandler or Just Moved In?

Call Utility Billing at 480-782-2280 to start an account and activate solid waste service. Solid waste service is billed through your Chandler Utility/Water Bill. Once set up, use Chandler’s InfoMap or the Recycle Coach app to find your collection zone and specific trash and recycling days. If you need additional containers, call 480-782-3510 — extra containers cost $75 (non-refundable) plus $10/month service charge for trash.

♻ Recycling Is Weekly in Chandler — Use It

Unlike most US cities where recycling is biweekly, Chandler collects recycling every week on a separate day from trash. This makes Chandler’s program more convenient than average. Use the blue container every week — clean, dry, loose items only. The more you recycle, the less goes to landfill from the Arizona desert region.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Chandler Residents Make

  • Putting items next to or on top of the container — only items inside the container are collected
  • Placing the container on the sidewalk — it must be in the street against the curb
  • Confusing trash day and recycling day — they are always on different weekdays in Chandler
  • Putting glass container lids in recycling — they are not accepted (too small or mixed materials)
  • Scheduling a bulk collection when items can fit in the RSWCC — the self-haul facility is often faster and doesn’t require 7–14 days advance notice

☔ Arizona Summer Heat Tips

The RSWCC switches to summer hours between the Thursday after Memorial Day and the Sunday before Labor Day — Thursday through Monday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). In extreme summer heat, trash left in cans can create odor and pest issues. Make sure cans are tightly lidded and placed in shade if possible. Yard waste and organic material should always be bagged and tied before placing in the trash can to minimize odor in the Arizona heat.

Call Utility Billing at 480-782-2280 to start an account in your name. Solid waste service is billed through your Chandler Utility/Water Bill. Once your account is active, solid waste collection will begin. If you need additional containers, call 480-782-3510 — extra containers cost $75 (non-refundable) plus a $10/month service charge for trash service.
First, check if your neighbors’ cans have been collected. If your can was the only one missed, leave it at the curb and call 480-782-3510 early the next business day (by 3 p.m. on Friday if your collection day is Friday). Before reporting, verify your zone and collection day, check for holiday delays, and confirm your container was properly placed in the street (not on sidewalk), lid closed, 3 feet from all obstacles, and all items inside the container.
Apartments, townhomes, and multi-family units that are not individually billed for city solid waste services may bring recycling to the RSWCC at no charge. They may also bring freon-bearing appliances for a fee. Regular trash from multi-family units: contact the property manager, as the building likely has commercial trash service. Multi-family residents can also use the HHW Collection Facility by appointment.
