Fort Collins Waste Collection — Quick Facts

Since September 30, 2024, Fort Collins operates a city-contracted residential trash and recycling program through Republic Services (formerly Gallegos Sanitation). The program uses a Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) system where your monthly rate is based on your trash cart size. Weekly recycling and seasonal yard trimmings are included in every service level. The program covers all single-unit and small multi-unit homes (up to 7 units) within Fort Collins city limits.

Pay-As-You-Throw

Five Service Levels & PAYT Pricing

Fort Collins uses a Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) system — you pay based on your trash cart size. Every service level includes weekly recycling (up to two 95-gallon carts) and seasonal yard trimmings (April–November). You can cancel yard trimmings for a $5/month reduction. Billing is quarterly, directly from Republic Services. Prices are evaluated annually.

📋 Billing & Account Management

  • Billed quarterly directly by Republic Services (not on a City utility bill).
  • Manage your account at republicservices.com/municipality/fort-collins-co, via the Republic Services app, or by calling (970) 484-5556.
  • Prices are reviewed and adjusted annually based on operational costs.
  • To cancel yard trimmings service, contact Republic Services — this saves $5/month for all service levels except XS.
  • To change your cart size, call Republic Services or manage online. You must keep any new cart size for a minimum period before downsizing again.
⚠ Opt-out fee: $11.41/month. Residents who choose to use a different hauler instead of Republic Services must still pay the City’s monthly opt-out fee of $11.41. This is a City of Fort Collins policy (not Republic Services), designed to ensure a minimum participation level so the City can negotiate lower contracted rates. See the Opt-Out section below for alternative haulers.

Curbside Recycling

Curbside Recycling — What Goes in the Cart

Fort Collins uses single-stream recycling collected every week on the same day as trash. Every PAYT service level includes up to two 95-gallon recycling carts at no additional charge. Carts out by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day. Items must be empty, clean, and loose — do not bag recyclables. Use the City’s Recycling A to Z Guide at apps.fcgov.com/recycling for any item you’re unsure about.

✅ Accepted Curbside

  • Paper & cardboard: newspapers, magazines, office paper, mail, catalogs, flattened cardboard boxes, paperboard, paper bags, pizza boxes
  • Metal cans: steel food cans, aluminum cans, empty aerosol cans
  • Plastic bottles, jugs & jars: rinsed — milk jugs, soda bottles, detergent bottles, yogurt tubs
  • Glass bottles & jars: all colors, rinsed (lids OK)
  • Cartons: milk cartons, juice cartons, broth cartons (refrigerated and shelf-stable)

🚫 Never in the Curbside Bin

  • Plastic bags or film → grocery store drop-off or Timberline Center
  • Styrofoam / polystyrene → trash
  • Food or food-soiled items → trash or compost
  • Electronics & batteries → Timberline Center or Larimer County HHW
  • Tanglers: hoses, cords, wire → trash
  • Small items (smaller than a credit card) → trash
  • Bagged recyclables → remove from bag and place loose, or bag goes to landfill
  • Medical sharps → pharmacy sharps container programs
💡 When in doubt, check the Recycling A to Z Guide. The City of Fort Collins maintains a searchable, up-to-date guide for every type of household item at apps.fcgov.com/recycling. It shows whether an item is curbside recyclable, accepted at Timberline, or considered hazardous waste.
Yard Trimmings

Yard Trimmings — Seasonal Collection (April–November)

Yard trimmings collection is included in all PAYT service levels at no extra charge, running April through November each year. Collection is weekly on your regular collection day, with up to one 95-gallon cart per week. You must sign up with Republic Services to activate this service. You can opt out for a $5/month savings (except on the XS service level).

🌿 Yard Trimmings Accepted

  • Leaves, grass clippings, weeds
  • Garden trimmings and plant material
  • Small branches up to 3 inches in diameter
  • Tree and shrub trimmings that fit in the 95-gallon cart

🚫 Not in Yard Trimmings Cart

  • Food scraps or kitchen waste
  • Regular household trash
  • Branches over 3 inches in diameter → Timberline Recycling Center wood waste drop-off, or self-haul to a compost facility
  • Dirt, rocks, sod, concrete

🍂 Composting Options Year-Round

For year-round composting (outside the April–November service window), residents can self-haul yard trimmings to A1 Organics in Eaton, CO, which accepts food waste, yard waste, green waste, and wood waste and also sells compost. Find this and other composting resources in the City’s Recycling A to Z Guide under “Yard Trimmings and Leaves.”

Bulky Items

Bulky Item Pickup — Two Free Per Year

Every Fort Collins PAYT service level includes two free eligible bulky item pickups per year at no additional cost. These are scheduled directly through Republic Services. Items are collected on your regular collection day.

📅 How to Schedule a Bulky Pickup

  1. Contact Republic Services by phone at (970) 484-5556 (Mon–Fri 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m.) or online at republicservices.com/municipality/fort-collins-co.
  2. Request a bulky item pickup and let them know what you need collected. They will confirm your scheduled date.
  3. Place items at the curb or on the parking strip on your scheduled collection day.
  4. Items are picked up on your regular weekly collection day by a special collection truck.

✅ Typically Accepted as Bulky Items

  • Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers, bed frames
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Large household appliances (Republic Services arranges special handling)
  • Large electronics (TVs, monitors, printers)
  • Tires
  • Large toys and outdoor equipment

🚫 Not via Bulky Pickup

  • Hazardous materials → Larimer County HHW Facility
  • Items that don’t qualify as residential bulky waste → contact Republic Services for guidance

💡 Need more than 2 bulky pickups per year? After your two free annual pickups, Republic Services offers additional pickups for a fee. Alternatively, take items to the Timberline Recycling Center for free drop-off of electronics, certain appliances, and hard-to-recycle materials. See the Timberline Center section below.
Opt-Out & Alternative Haulers

Opting Out of Republic Services — Alternative Haulers

Residents who prefer not to use Republic Services may opt out of the contracted program. However, the City of Fort Collins charges an opt-out fee of $11.41/month even if you use a different hauler. This fee ensures that enough residents participate in the contracted program to maintain the lower PAYT pricing for the community. Residents selecting alternative haulers pay this fee on top of their chosen hauler’s rates.

🚙 Ram Waste Systems / Waste Connections

📞 (970) 226-3396

Alternative hauler serving Fort Collins. Must comply with PAYT ordinance and City recycling requirements.

🚙 Step Up Disposals

⚠ All haulers must follow Fort Collins’ PAYT ordinance. The City’s Community Recycling Ordinance applies to all licensed haulers, including alternative haulers. They must provide recycling service and comply with the same rules as Republic Services. Residents using alternative haulers still pay the City’s $11.41/month opt-out fee.

🚚 Who the Contracted Program Covers

  • The Republic Services contracted program covers single-unit and small multi-unit homes with 7 or fewer units.

  • All licensed haulers in Fort Collins must provide recycling as part of their service offerings.
  • Multi-family residents can check with their building manager for recycling cart locations and schedules.
  • For business recycling resources, contact the City’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Assistance Program (WRAP) at recycling@fortcollins.gov or (970) 221-6600.
Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Pickup Was Missed

  1. Confirm your collection day using the address lookup at republicservices.com/municipality/fort-collins-co or by calling (970) 484-5556.
  2. Check for a holiday delay. If the current week includes New Year’s, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, your pickup may have shifted one day later. Verify your adjusted date in the Republic Services app or online.
  3. Verify cart placement: carts must be out by 6:00 a.m., at the curb with handles facing the house, lids closed, and at least 3 feet from obstructions. Overfilled carts may be skipped. Recycling must be loose (not bagged).
  4. Contact Republic Services at (970) 484-5556 (Mon–Fri 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m.) to report the missed pickup. Have your address ready. You can also report through your online account or the Republic Services app.
  5. If the issue is not resolved, contact the City of Fort Collins at (970) 221-6600 or recycling@fortcollins.gov.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Fort Collins Trash Pickup

Your collection day depends on your address. Look it up at republicservices.com/municipality/fort-collins-co or call Republic Services at (970) 484-5556 (Mon–Fri 7:30 a.m.–5 p.m.). Trash and recycling are collected on the same day each week. Carts must be out by 6:00 a.m.
Yes. All PAYT service levels in the Republic Services contracted program include weekly recycling collection — not every other week. Up to two 95-gallon recycling carts are included at no additional charge. XS service (35-gallon trash cart every 2 weeks) still receives weekly recycling.
Republic Services observes six holidays: New Year’s Day (Jan 1), Memorial Day (May 25), Independence Day (Jul 4 — Saturday in 2026, so no delay), Labor Day (Sep 7), Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26), and Christmas Day (Dec 25). When your collection day falls on or after one of these holidays, service shifts one day later for that week. MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, and Veterans Day are not observed — service runs normally.
PAYT means your monthly rate is based on your trash cart size — XS (35-gal biweekly) is cheapest, XL (190-gal weekly) is most expensive. All levels include weekly recycling and seasonal yard trimmings (April–November). Billing is quarterly from Republic Services. To lower costs, downsize your trash cart and use your recycling and yard trimmings carts to divert more waste.
Residents who choose not to use Republic Services must pay a City-mandated opt-out fee of $11.41/month. This fee is charged by the City of Fort Collins (not Republic Services) to ensure enough residents participate so the City can maintain competitive contracted pricing for everyone. Alternative haulers like Ram Waste Systems/Waste Connections (970-226-3396) and Step Up Disposals (970-888-1414) are available, but you pay both their rates and the opt-out fee.
Contact Republic Services at (970) 484-5556 or through your online account. Two free eligible bulky item pickups per year are included with all PAYT service levels. Items are collected on your regular collection day by a special truck. For hard-to-recycle items like electronics, batteries, and paint, the Timberline Recycling Center at 1903 S. Timberline Road offers free year-round drop-off.
Yard trimmings collection is included in all PAYT service levels but must be activated. Contact Republic Services at (970) 484-5556 to sign up. Service runs April through November, weekly on your regular collection day, with up to one 95-gallon cart. You can opt out for $5/month savings (not applicable to XS service). Branches must be 3 inches or less in diameter.
Use the Larimer County HHW Facility at 5887 S. Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins. Open Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. — closed Wednesdays and during high-wind days. Call the 24-hour info line at (970) 498-5770 before visiting to check for wind closures. The Timberline Recycling Center at 1903 S. Timberline Road also accepts batteries, electronics, paint, and motor oil for free.
The contracted program covers single-unit and small multi-unit homes with 7 or fewer units. Buildings with 8+ units and businesses must contract directly with a licensed hauler. All Fort Collins haulers must provide recycling service under the Community Recycling Ordinance, and businesses/apartments must have at least 33% of total waste volume as recycling. Contact your building manager for your specific hauler and schedule.
The Timberline Recycling Center at 1903 S. Timberline Road, Fort Collins is the City’s main free drop-off recycling site. It accepts everyday recyclables (cardboard, glass, cans, paper, plastic, plastic bags) and hard-to-recycle materials including electronics, batteries, paint, motor oil, and wood waste. The Hard-to-Recycle Materials Yard is co-located at the same address. Free for all Fort Collins residents. Check fortcollins.gov/Timberline for current hours.
