Salt Lake City Waste Collection — Quick Facts

Salt Lake City’s Waste & Recycling Division (SLCgreen) operates one of the most comprehensive curbside waste programs in the Mountain West. All residential customers receive four color-coded carts collected weekly on the same day. Recycling and compost are mandatory — city ordinance prohibits placing compostable or recyclable items in the garbage cart. Service fees are based on garbage cart size and appear on your monthly City utility bill.

⚠ Collection days changed on February 3, 2025. If you haven’t checked your collection day since early 2025, verify it now at the City’s address lookup tool. Many neighborhoods across Salt Lake City were assigned a new pickup day as part of a citywide route reorganization.
⚠ City of Salt Lake City ≠ Salt Lake County or surrounding cities. The SLC Waste & Recycling Division only serves single-family homes, duplexes, and triplexes within City of Salt Lake City limits. South Salt Lake, Murray, Holladay, Millcreek, West Valley City, and unincorporated Salt Lake County areas have separate waste programs.
Four-Cart System

Salt Lake City’s Four Carts — What Goes Where

Every SLC Waste & Recycling customer receives four color-coded carts, all collected on the same weekday, every week. Recycling and compost are mandatory by city ordinance — you cannot opt out of the recycling cart, and compostable items must go in the brown cart (not the green garbage cart). Glass recycling is optional and requires a separate sign-up.

⏰ Set-Out Rules

  • All carts out by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day (set out the evening before to be safe).
  • Carts must be at the curb or parking strip (not in the street), handles facing your house.
  • Keep at least 3 feet of clearance between carts and from other objects.
  • Lids must be fully closed. Overfilled carts may not be collected.
  • Do not bag recyclables — place them loose in the blue cart.
  • City ordinance 9.08.030 prohibits placing recyclable or compostable items in the garbage cart. Violations may result in fees.

📋 Rates & Billing (After July 2025 Increase)

Monthly service fees are based on your garbage cart size. Recycling, compost, and Call 2 Haul (bulk pickup) are included in the base fee at no extra charge. Glass recycling is an optional add-on at $8.50/month. Fees appear on your monthly City of Salt Lake City utility bill. Log in to your account at slcgov.com/utilities to view rates, request cart size changes, or sign up for glass service.

Holiday Schedule

Salt Lake City Holiday Trash Collection Schedule 2026

Salt Lake City’s Waste & Recycling Division collects on nearly all holidays — only three cause a delay. Collection is delayed one day only for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. All other holidays (MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, etc.) are normal collection days. If a holiday falls on a weekend, the schedule is not affected.

💡 Salt Lake City works on MORE holidays than almost any US city. MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day are all normal collection days. Only Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day cause a one-day delay. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are not holidays — collection occurs normally on those days when they fall on weekdays.
❄ Weather delays. In the event of heavy snow or another major weather event, curbside collection may be suspended and delayed one day for the remainder of the week. Follow @SLCgreen on X (Twitter) for real-time announcements.
Recycling — Blue Cart

What Goes in the Blue Recycling Cart

Salt Lake City uses single-stream recycling collected every week on the same day as garbage and compost. All items must be clean, empty, and placed loose (never in plastic bags). Recycling is mandatory — placing recyclable items in the garbage cart is prohibited by city ordinance. Note: Glass is recycled separately in Salt Lake City — do not put glass in the blue cart. See the Grey Glass Cart section below.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Cart

  • Paper: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, office paper, junk mail, books, paper bags, wrapping paper
  • Cardboard — flattened (corrugated boxes, cereal boxes, paperboard)
  • Aluminum and steel cans (food, beverage, empty aerosol)
  • Rigid plastic bottles, jugs, cups, and containers — rinsed and emptied
  • Cartons: milk, juice, broth (refrigerated and shelf-stable)
  • Paper cups (hot and cold beverages) — empty liquids first
  • Plastic polypropylene cups (soda cups) — empty liquids first

🚫 Never in the Blue Cart

  • Glass → grey glass cart or free drop-off sites
  • Plastic bags or film → grocery store drop-off
  • Styrofoam / polystyrene → trash
  • Food or food-soiled items → brown compost cart or trash
  • Electronics or batteries → Salt Lake County HHW or Call 2 Haul
  • Tanglers: hoses, cords, wire hangers → trash
  • Food wrappers and packaging → trash
  • “Compostable” or “biodegradable” packaging → trash (SLC facility cannot process)
💡 No “wishful recycling.” When unsure whether something is recyclable, put it in the trash rather than risking contamination of the entire blue cart. Contaminated loads are sent to the landfill. Check slc.gov/blue-recycling-cart for the complete accepted materials list.
Compost — Brown Cart

Brown Compost Cart & 2026 Winter Suspension

The brown compost cart is collected weekly on the same day as garbage and recycling. There is no extra charge — compost collection is included in your base monthly fee. Compostable material is processed at Salt Lake City’s compost facility and sold as compost and mulch at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill.

❄ 2026 Winter Compost Suspension: January 19 – March 2, 2026. Brown compost carts are NOT collected during this period to conserve fuel and reduce winter air pollution. Compost collection resumed the week of March 2, 2026. If you have remaining yard waste during the suspension, you may request a temporary extra brown cart for storage (carts are delivered but not serviced during suspension).

✅ Accepted in the Brown Cart

  • All yard waste: leaves, lawn clippings, tree branches (cut to fit), weeds, garden waste
  • Fruits and vegetables (all types)
  • Eggshells
  • Coffee grounds and paper filters
  • Tea bags (without metal staples)
  • Holiday trees: cut to 4-foot lengths, remove all decorations first

🚫 Not in the Brown Cart

  • Meat, fish, bones, or dairy → trash (facility cannot process)
  • Any packaging, even if labeled “biodegradable” or “compostable” → trash
  • Paper products (paper plates, paper towels) → trash
  • Dirt, rocks, sod, concrete → trash
  • Animal waste or pet feces → trash
  • Plastic bags (even compostable/BPI ones) → trash
  • Sawdust, treated or construction wood → trash
  • Flocked (spray-snow) Christmas trees → garbage

🎄 Christmas Tree Disposal

Cut your holiday tree into pieces no longer than 4 feet and place them in the brown compost cart for composting. Do not stuff the whole tree into the cart — it cannot be removed. Alternatively, bare trees can be left at the curb for curbside collection in mid-to-late January. Remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, and stands. Flocked (white-sprayed) trees are not accepted in the brown cart and go in the green garbage cart.

Glass — Grey Cart

Glass Recycling — Grey Cart & Free Drop-Off Sites

Glass is not accepted in the blue recycling cart in Salt Lake City. Glass is processed separately because it damages sorting equipment at the recycling facility when mixed with other materials. You have two options for glass recycling:

💨 Curbside Grey Glass Cart (Optional)

Sign up for a 35-gallon grey glass cart that is collected weekly on the same day as your other carts.

Cost: $8.50/month added to your utility bill. One-time activation fee applies.

Accepted: All colors of glass bottles and jars. Remove all lids and corks. No need to separate by color.

Sign up online at slc.gov/sustainability or call (801) 535-6999.

🚩 Free Glass Drop-Off Sites

Free glass recycling drop-off locations are available throughout Salt Lake City for residents who do not subscribe to curbside glass collection.

Find the nearest drop-off site at slc.gov/sustainability/what-can-i-recycle.

Also available at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill, 6030 W. California Ave.

Call 2 Haul — Bulk Pickup

Call 2 Haul — Two Free Bulk Pickups per Year

Salt Lake City’s Call 2 Haul program provides two free scheduled bulk waste pickups per year for all residential curbside garbage service customers. One pickup is for bulky items (furniture, appliances, e-waste, etc.) and one is for green waste (brush, tree limbs, yard debris). Service is year-round and included in your base garbage fee at no extra charge. Items are collected on your regular collection day.

📅 How to Schedule Call 2 Haul

  1. Locate your SLC Public Utilities account number (on your utility bill or request from your landlord).
  2. Request a pickup using the online form at slc.gov/sustainability/call-2-haul or call (801) 535-6999 (Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m.). Available in English and Spanish.
  3. Select your date from the available options. You’ll receive a confirmation by email or phone.
  4. Place items on the parking strip or curb on your scheduled day. Do not place items out more than 24 hours in advance.
  5. Items are collected on your regular collection day. The City uses different trucks for recyclable vs. landfill items — this is why pre-scheduling is required.

✅ Accepted via Call 2 Haul

  • Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, desks, bed frames, bookshelves, filing cabinets
  • Mattresses and box springs (keep dry and clean for recycling)
  • All household appliances: ranges, dishwashers, washers, dryers, hot water heaters
  • Refrigerators and coolant-containing appliances (City removes coolant; doors must be taped shut)
  • Lawnmowers (emptied of gas/oil), barbecue grills, exercise equipment
  • Carpet and pad (rolled into 5-foot lengths and bound)
  • Tires (up to 4 per year)
  • Electronic waste: computers, TVs, phones, printers, monitors, cables
  • Green waste (second annual pickup): brush, tree limbs (cut to 5 ft max), hedges
  • Scrap metal, pipes, shelving units
  • Doors, cabinets

🚫 Not Accepted via Call 2 Haul

  • Construction/demolition debris: drywall, lumber over 5 ft, flooring, fencing → private hauler
  • Hazardous materials: paint, chemicals, fuel → Salt Lake County HHW
  • Loose, small items unless bagged or boxed
  • City-owned park strip trees (contact Urban Forestry: (801) 972-7818)
  • Soiled or wet mattresses (will be landfilled, not recycled)
  • Commercial or business waste
  • Loose leaf piles or grass clippings that wash into storm drains
💡 Neighborhood Call 2 Haul events. Up to 20 contiguous homes may schedule a neighborhood collection event together — either for bulk items or green waste. A neighborhood point person contacts the Call 2 Haul team, provides all participating house numbers, and coordinates the pickup. Contact (801) 535-6999 or call2haul@slcgov.com to organize.

💡 January 1, 2026: New Utah landfill law on uncovered loads. If you self-haul to the Salt Lake Valley Landfill, state law now requires all loads to be completely covered. Beginning January 1, 2026, uncovered loads are charged an additional fee equal to the disposal price (effectively double). Always cover or secure your load with a tarp before driving to the landfill.
Apartments & Multi-Family

Apartments, Condos & Multi-Family Buildings

SLC Waste & Recycling services are available to single-family homes, duplexes, and triplexes within Salt Lake City limits. Larger multi-family buildings and businesses must arrange service through a licensed private hauler.

🚚 Multi-Family Recycling Requirements

  • All businesses and multi-family properties in Salt Lake City are required to provide recycling services under City Ordinance 9.08.200 (effective since 2016). This applies to all apartment buildings, condominiums, and commercial properties.
  • If you live in an apartment building with 4+ units, contact your building manager to find out which private hauler provides waste and recycling service.
  • Some larger buildings can opt in to City-provided collection services. Contact the Waste & Recycling Division at (801) 535-6999 to inquire.
  • Organics drop-off and glass drop-off sites are available to all Salt Lake City residents regardless of building type. Find locations at slc.gov/sustainability.

  1. Verify your collection day. Collection days changed citywide on February 3, 2025. Use the official address lookup at slc.gov/sustainability to confirm your current day.
  2. Check for a holiday delay. Only Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day cause delays. All other holidays are normal collection days. If a delay applies, your collection shifts one day later.

Salt Lake City Trash & Recycling Tips Every Resident Should Know

🏠 New to Salt Lake City or Just Moved In?

Check your collection day at slc.gov/sustainability — it may have changed from what you expect. Your four carts (green, blue, brown, and optionally grey) should already be at your address. If missing, call (801) 535-6999. Sign up for the optional grey glass cart (add-on) and schedule your two free annual Call 2 Haul pickups at any time during the year.

🏭 Buy Back Compost & Mulch

The compost your brown cart generates is processed into compost and mulch, available for purchase year-round at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill, 6030 W. California Ave. (1300 South). Contact the landfill at (385) 468-6370 for current pricing and hours. Buying local compost closes the loop on your brown cart materials.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Salt Lake City Residents Make

  • Putting glass in the blue recycling cart — glass is not accepted in the blue cart; use the grey cart or free drop-off sites
  • Not checking their collection day after the February 2025 citywide route change
  • Putting packaging labeled “compostable” in the brown cart — the SLC facility cannot process compostable packaging; it goes in the green garbage cart
  • Forgetting Call 2 Haul — two free bulk pickups/year are included; schedule them before year-end
  • Missing the winter compost suspension — the brown cart is not collected for about 6 weeks in January–February; plan ahead to empty remaining yard waste before the suspension starts

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Salt Lake City Trash Pickup

Your collection day depends on your address. Collection days changed citywide on February 3, 2025, so verify your current day at slc.gov/sustainability/waste-management or call (801) 535-6999 (Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m.). All four carts — green garbage, blue recycling, brown compost, and grey glass (if subscribed) — are collected on the same day each week.
Recycling in Salt Lake City is collected every week — not every other week. All four carts (garbage, recycling, compost, and glass if subscribed) are collected on the same day, once per week. Recycling is also mandatory — city ordinance prohibits placing recyclable items in the garbage cart.
Only three holidays cause a one-day collection delay: Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26), Christmas Day (Dec 25), and New Year’s Day (Jan 1). All other major holidays — including MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day — are normal collection days. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are also normal collection days. If a holiday falls on a weekend, the schedule is not affected.
No. Glass is not accepted in the blue recycling cart in Salt Lake City. Glass must go in the optional grey curbside glass cart ($8.50/month add-on) or at free glass drop-off locations citywide. Do not put glass in the blue cart — it damages sorting equipment at the recycling facility.
Each year, Salt Lake City temporarily suspends brown compost cart collection for approximately 6 weeks during winter to save fuel costs and reduce winter air pollution. In 2026, the suspension runs from January 19 through March 2. Compost collection resumes the week of March 2. During the suspension, you can request a temporary extra brown cart for storing yard waste. Garbage and recycling collection continue normally during the suspension.
Call 2 Haul is Salt Lake City’s free bulk waste pickup program. Two pickups are included per year with your residential garbage service — one for bulk items (furniture, appliances, e-waste, tires, mattresses) and one for green waste (brush, tree limbs). Schedule by calling (801) 535-6999 or using the online form at slc.gov/sustainability/call-2-haul. Place items on the parking strip or curb no more than 24 hours before your scheduled collection day.
Accepted in the brown cart: all yard waste (leaves, grass, branches cut to fit, weeds), fruits and vegetables, eggshells, coffee grounds and paper filters, tea bags (no metal staples), and holiday tree pieces cut to 4 feet or less. Not accepted: meat, dairy, bones, any packaging (even labeled “compostable” or “biodegradable”), paper products, dirt, animal waste, or plastic bags of any kind.
