Two-Cart System

Reno’s Two-Cart System — Trash & Recycling

WM provides two carts for each Reno residence. The franchise agreement with the City of Reno requires all customers to use WM’s carts — no personal bins or bags as substitutes. Three cart size options are available for trash; the recycling cart is 96 or 64 gallons. Service begins effective April 1, 2026 under updated residential rates.

🗑

Trash Cart (35, 64, or 96 gal)

All non-recyclable household waste. Must be bagged before placing in cart. Lid must close tightly. Weekly collection. Overflow requires an excess waste sticker.

Weekly • Bag All Items

Blue Recycling Cart (64 or 96 gal)

Single-stream recycling. All accepted items go in loose — never bagged. Biweekly, on even or odd weeks. Blue-lidded cart identifies your recycling container.

Every Other Week • Loose Only

⏰ Cart Placement Rules

  • Place carts on the street with wheels against the curb by 6:00 a.m. on collection day.
  • Remove carts from the curb the same day after collection.
  • Keep carts at least 3 feet from parked cars, mailboxes, and other obstacles.
  • Lid must close tightly. Overflow items outside the cart may not be collected or may incur additional charges.
  • All trash must be bagged before placing in the trash cart.
  • Recyclables must be placed loose in the blue cart — never bagged (even in clear bags). Bagged recyclables are treated as trash.

Recycling — Blue Cart

Reno Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Cart

Reno uses single-stream recycling in the blue-lidded cart, collected every other week on your regular trash day. WM emphasizes recycling by shape for plastics, not by number: bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs only — regardless of the resin code. WM’s Three Basic Rules: Recycle dry bottles, cans, paper and cardboard • Keep food and liquid out • No loose plastic bags or film, no bagged recyclables. New in 2026: plastic and paper to-go cups are now accepted.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Cart

  • Plastics (by shape): bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs only — #1 and #2 (water bottles, milk jugs, detergent bottles, yogurt containers). When in doubt, throw it out.
  • NEW 2026: Plastic and paper to-go cups now accepted
  • Paper: newspaper, office paper, magazines, junk mail, paper bags
  • Cardboard: flattened boxes; large pieces can be taken to cardboard drop-off at 1100 E. Commercial Row
  • Beverage cartons: milk cartons, juice boxes, soy milk containers, broth boxes
  • Metal: aluminum cans, tin/steel cans, clean aluminum foil, metal lids
  • Glass: bottles and jars, all colors — clear, green, brown (food and beverage only, rinsed)

🚫 Never in the Blue Cart

  • Plastic bags, film, bubble wrap → grocery store drop-off (Trex partner locations)
  • Bagged recyclables of any kind — bags are treated as trash
  • Food or liquid residue — rinse everything first
  • Styrofoam → check HERO Environmental
  • Electronics → HERO Environmental or WM EcoCenter
  • Batteries → HERO Environmental (HHW voucher)
  • Household chemicals, paint, motor oil → GrayMar HHW voucher program
  • Construction or demolition debris → transfer station
  • Auto parts, tires, medical waste

🚬 Recycling Contamination Program

WM monitors for recycling contamination (prohibited items in the blue cart). The first two incidents result in a notification tag on your cart. Repeat violations may result in a surcharge added to your bill. If your recycling cart is flagged, remove the prohibited items and place them in your trash cart before the next collection.

🍃 Plastic Bag & Film Recycling

Plastic bags, film wrap, and bubble wrap cannot go in your blue cart — they tangle sorting machinery. The City of Reno is working with Trex to collect plastic film. Bins are located at Reno City Hall, 1 E First St., on the first and second floors. Also, many grocery stores (Target, Kroger-affiliated stores) have plastic film drop-off bins in their lobbies. Check trex.com for the complete accepted items list and drop-off locations.

Extra Waste & Overflow

Extra Waste Stickers & Overflow Options

Reno residents receive 20 excess waste stickers per year included with their WM service. Each sticker can be used for overflow trash that doesn’t fit in the cart — such as an extra bag placed beside the trash cart on collection day. Stickers are mailed with your WM bill. Keep them in a safe place; they are not replaceable if lost.

🎨 How Excess Waste Stickers Work

  • Each sticker authorizes collection of one extra bag or bundle placed beside the cart on collection day.
  • Only bags or items with a sticker attached will be collected. Items without stickers may be left behind.
  • Place sticker-tagged items within clear view of the cart at the curb.
  • Stickers are included with your annual WM bill. If you run out, additional stickers can be purchased by calling 775-329-8822.
  • Stickers can also be used for extra yard waste bags (32-gallon bags) placed beside the cart.
💡 Large volume of waste? Use your 4 free annual transfer station trips instead of using multiple stickers. Each trip allows disposal of one standard pickup truck load (3 cubic yards) of material, which is far more economical for large cleanouts than stickers. See the Transfer Station section below.
Transfer Stations & Drop-Off

Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste — GrayMar Voucher & HERO Drop-Off

HHW never belongs in curbside carts. Reno WM customers have two primary options: the annual GrayMar Environmental voucher (mailed in July bills) and year-round drop-off at HERO Environmental Services.

🔥 GrayMar Environmental — Annual Voucher Program

WM partners with GrayMar Environmental to offer Reno residents a free annual HHW disposal voucher. The voucher is included in your July WM bill. Use it to dispose of paint, batteries, pesticides, motor oil, and other household chemicals at no charge.

Yard Waste

Yard Waste Disposal in Reno — No Curbside Cart Service

Reno does not have a dedicated curbside yard waste cart or collection service. Yard waste and green clippings should go in your trash cart. For larger volumes, Reno residents have several disposal alternatives.

🌿 Options for Yard Waste

  • Trash cart: Small amounts of yard waste go in the regular trash cart. If it won’t fit, use an excess waste sticker for a 32-gallon bag placed beside the cart.
  • Free transfer station trips: Use one of your 4 free annual trips to the Commercial Row or Stead Transfer Station for large yard waste volumes (3 cubic yards per trip).
  • HERO Environmental yard waste drop-off: Loose and bagged yard debris can be dropped off at 4900 Mill St., Suite #7, Monday–Friday 8am–3pm, Saturday 9am–3pm. Fees may apply for non-residential volumes.
  • Home composting: Reno and Washoe County conducted a composting survey in May 2025 finding that 83% of respondents would compost food waste if available. Backyard composting is encouraged by the City of Reno as a landfill diversion strategy.

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Reno

  1. Verify your collection day and recycling week. Use the WM address lookup tool at wm.com or call 775-329-8822. Download the Even Week or Odd Week calendar from the WM Reno page and confirm which week your recycling runs.
  2. Check for cart issues. WM does not delay for holidays — there are no holiday excuses in Reno. However, severe weather or equipment issues can occasionally cause a one-day delay. Check your My WM account for any service alerts.
  3. Verify cart placement: wheels against the curb, out by 6 a.m., lid closed tightly, at least 3 feet from obstacles. Items outside the cart require an excess waste sticker. Recyclables must be loose, never bagged.

Reno Trash & Recycling Tips Every Resident Should Know

🏠 New to Reno or Just Moved In?

Set up your WM service at wm.com/reno or call 775-329-8822. The city requires all residents to use WM — it’s the only authorized hauler. Sign up for a My WM account to view your pickup ETA, report missed pickups, manage your account, and receive service alerts. Save your 20 annual excess waste stickers — they arrive with your bill. Save your July bill (which contains the GrayMar HHW voucher) for hazardous waste disposal.

❄️ Winter Weather Delays

Reno’s high desert climate brings winter storms that can occasionally cause WM collection delays. In cases of severe weather or road conditions, collection may be delayed by one day. Check your My WM account or call 775-329-8822 during winter weather events for updated service information.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Reno Residents Make

  • Putting recyclables in plastic bags — bagged recyclables are treated as trash and sent to the landfill, even if the contents were recyclable
  • Placing HHW (paint, batteries, chemicals) in the trash or recycling cart — use the GrayMar voucher (July bill) or HERO Environmental drop-off
  • Missing the 3-day window to report a missed pickup — after 3 days, WM will not send a recovery truck
  • Not knowing which recycling week (even or odd) you’re on — download your calendar from wm.com or use the My WM app
  • Plastic bags in the recycling cart — these tangle machinery at the MRF and cause entire loads to be rejected. Drop plastic bags at Reno City Hall (1 E First St, floors 1–2) or grocery store bins instead
