Springfield Waste Collection — Quick Facts

Springfield uses two private licensed waste haulers — Lake Area Disposal & Recycling and Republic Services. The City of Springfield’s Office of Public Works runs separate city programs for biweekly yard waste/leaf pickup (contracted to Lake Area), branch pickup (4 times/year in quadrants), and large item pickup. Residents pay a monthly Waste and Recycling Fee on their CWLP (City, Water, Light & Power) utility bill that funds these city programs.

⚠ Private haulers — not a single city collection service. Springfield city ordinance requires every residential and commercial property to have a private waste hauler. The city does NOT provide universal curbside trash collection. Your specific pickup day depends on your hauler and your street’s route. Contact your hauler directly to confirm your day.
Licensed Haulers

Springfield’s Two Licensed Waste Haulers

As of 2025, two haulers serve Springfield residential customers after Waste Management transferred most of its Springfield residential routes to Republic Services. Both are licensed by the city and collect weekly. Your specific collection day depends on your street and your hauler’s route.

🚚 Lake Area Disposal & Recycling

Local, family-owned company serving Springfield since 1933 (92+ years). Locally owned by the Crenshaw family.

📞 217-522-9271

📍 2742 S. 6th Street

📅 Office: Mon–Fri 8:00 AM–3:00 PM

🌐 lakeareadisposal.com

🚚 Republic Services

National hauler that absorbed most of Waste Management’s former Springfield residential routes in early 2025. Serves the majority of Springfield residential routes.

📞 217-522-7797

📍 Sangamon Valley Landfill, 2565 Sandhill Road

📅 Office: Mon–Fri 7:00 AM–3:00 PM

🌐 republicservices.com

📝 City Rate Limits for Garbage Collection

The City of Springfield caps what haulers can charge residential customers (as of September 2016): maximum $15/month for one container (32–64 gallons) and $18/month for two containers (65–94 gallons combined). Haulers may charge additional fees for excess waste beyond your subscribed service level.

Trash collection typically starts at 5:00 AM. Have your containers at the curb before then on your collection day.

💡 Recent change (2025): Waste Management exited most Springfield residential routes in early 2025, transferring customers to Republic Services. If you were a WM customer and haven’t confirmed your new hauler yet, call Republic Services at 217-522-7797 or check your billing. Existing WM cans may still be used; Republic provided blue stickers to identify transferred customers.
Recycling

Recycling in Springfield — Curbside & Drop-Off

Curbside recycling is offered as an add-on service by both licensed haulers at approximately $3/month per unit. City Yard Waste Program

City Biweekly Yard Waste & Leaf Pickup Program

The City of Springfield runs a free biweekly curbside yard waste/leaf pickup program for all city residents, contracted to Lake Area Disposal. The city is divided into two zones — North Zone and South Zone — with alternating weekly pickups throughout the year. This program is separate from your private hauler’s service.

🌿 North Zone

Area north of South Grand Avenue and Old Jacksonville Road, including properties west of Veterans Parkway/north of Iles Avenue.

Picked up every other week. Check the 2026 Yard Waste Schedule at springfield.il.us.

🌿 South Zone

Area south of South Grand Avenue and Old Jacksonville Road, including residential areas around Lake Springfield.

Picked up every other week. Download the 2026 calendar from the Public Works page at springfield.il.us.

📝 Yard Waste Set-Out Rules

  • Place yard waste bags or containers curbside by 6:00 AM on Monday of your pickup week.
  • Use brown paper yard waste bags or hard plastic containers marked clearly “YW” or “Yard Waste.”
  • Each bag or container must weigh no more than 50 lbs.
  • No stickers required for this city program (unlike hauler yard waste service which may require stickers).
  • Western portions of each zone collected early in the week; eastern portions later in the week.
  • If missed: email springfieldyw@lakeareadisposal.com or call the Office of Public Works at 217-789-2255.

⚠ Yard Waste via Private Hauler (Separate from City Program)

Your private hauler (Lake Area or Republic) may also collect yard waste as part of or in addition to your garbage service. Hauler-collected yard waste typically requires a sticker on each bag (costing no more than $2 each, available at haulers’ offices and hardware stores). Without a sticker, haulers may charge $2.50 per bag. This is separate from the City’s free biweekly program above.

Branch Program

City Branch Pickup Program — 4 Times Per Year

The City of Springfield’s Office of Public Works runs a branch and brush pickup program four times per year, conducted by quadrant. In January, Christmas trees are collected during the same week as branches. Drop-off is also available year-round at Evans Recycling.

📅 2026 Branch Pickup Dates by Quadrant

  • January (+ Christmas trees): Northwest (Jan 5) → Southwest (Jan 12) → Southeast (Jan 19) → Northeast (Jan 26)
  • April: Specific dates by quadrant — check springfield.il.us/PublicWorks for 2026 schedule
  • Two additional rounds per year — posted at Public Works page

Quadrant boundaries: Northwest = north of South Grand/Old Jacksonville Rd, west of Walnut St/J David Jones Pkwy • Southwest = south of South Grand, west of Walnut • Southeast = south of South Grand, east of Walnut (incl. Lake Springfield area) • Northeast = north of South Grand, east of Walnut

🌿 Branch Set-Out Rules

  • Place branch piles adjacent to the street (not on street or sidewalk), during your scheduled collection week.
  • Branch pile must be no larger than 4 feet wide and 10 feet long.
  • No need to call ahead — city crews inventory neighborhoods and dispatch vehicles.
  • Smaller branches may be broken up and placed in yard waste bags for the biweekly program.

Household Hazardous Waste in Springfield

Springfield does not have a permanent year-round HHW facility. Instead, the City of Springfield’s Office of Public Works holds an annual HHW collection event in partnership with the Illinois EPA. 🚫 5 Common Mistakes Springfield Residents Make

  • Missing the annual HHW event for oil-based paint, pesticides, and other hazardous materials — check Public Works for dates
  • Putting Styrofoam (#6 plastic) in curbside recycling — not accepted by either local hauler
  • Not knowing your North vs. South yard waste zone — download the 2026 calendar to know your biweekly dates
