Recycling — Blue Cart

Savannah Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Cart

Savannah uses single-stream curbside recycling collected weekly on the same day as garbage — no sorting required. All items must be placed loose in the blue cart (never bagged). Recycling service is free for all City of Savannah residents. Request your cart by calling 311 after water service is established.

⚠ Glass recycling program update: The City’s dedicated glass drop-off program was temporarily suspended after its vendor halted operations. During this interim period, the Sanitation Department has advised residents to place glass containers (bottles and jars) in their curbside recycling cart. Updates will be provided at savannahga.gov/glass-recycling when a new solution is implemented. Check the current status before placing glass in your cart.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Cart

  • Aluminum, tin, and steel cans & lids
  • Paper: newspapers, office paper, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, phone books, paper bags
  • Dry, broken-down cardboard (must be flattened)
  • Plastic containers #1–7 (bottles, jugs, tubs, bags excluded): rinsed
  • Cartons: juice, milk, soup, broth, wine, cream (shelf-stable and refrigerated)
  • Glass bottles and jars — placed in blue cart during current interim period per Sanitation Dept. guidance

Yard Waste

Yard Waste Collection — The Day After Your Garbage Day

Yard waste in Savannah is collected once a week, the day after your regular garbage collection day. For example: if your garbage is Monday, yard waste is collected Tuesday. If garbage is Friday, yard waste is collected Saturday. Use biodegradable brown paper bags only — plastic bags will not be accepted and may result in a fee.

✅ Accepted for Yard Waste Collection

  • Leaves and grass clippings in biodegradable brown paper bags (max 15 bags/week)
  • Loose piles of limbs and branches — neatly placed at curb
  • Garden trimmings, dead plants, flowers
  • Bagged plants and grass clippings can also be composted or used as mulch as an alternative

🚫 Not Accepted for Yard Waste

  • Plastic bags → fee charged; use biodegradable paper bags only
  • More than 15 bags per week → fee charged for excess
  • Limb/branch piles that take more than 5 minutes to collect → fee charged
  • Food waste or household garbage
  • Soil, rocks, or construction debris
⚠ Fee schedule applies to yard waste violations. Fees are imposed for: yard waste in plastic bags, more than 15 bags per week, and limb/brush piles that take more than 5 minutes to collect. Fees are based on the current City of Savannah Revenue Code. Call 311 if you need to schedule special collection for an exceptionally large yard waste volume.
Bulk Item Pickup

Bulk Item Pickup — Same Day as Garbage

Bulk items (objects too large to fit in your trash cart with the lid fully closed) are collected on your regular garbage collection day. Items should be placed neatly and orderly at the curb before 7:00 a.m. Note: Bulk items taking more than 5 minutes to collect will incur a fee per the City of Savannah Revenue Ordinance. You can also bring bulk items to City drop-off locations with proof of residency.

✅ Accepted Bulk Items

  • Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers, bed frames
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Appliances (call 311 for items requiring special handling)
  • Toilets and bathroom fixtures
  • Bicycles
  • Scrap metal
  • Other large household items

🚫 Not Placed Near Mailbox, Fence, or Utility Pole

  • Items blocking pedestrian access or in the street/right-of-way/median → illegal dumping; report to 311
  • Construction or contractor-generated debris → contractor responsibility
  • Hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, oil) → special handling
  • Commercial waste or rental property waste → fee applies

🚚 Bulk Item Drop-Off Option

Instead of curbside collection, City of Savannah residents may also bring bulk items directly to:

  • Dean Forest Road Landfill — 1327 Dean Forest Rd. (accepts bulk items from residents; closed Sundays and City holidays)
  • Bacon Park Transfer Station — 6400 Skidaway Rd. (Wed–Sun, 9 a.m.–4:45 p.m.; closed Mon, Tue, and City holidays)

Proof of residency required at both facilities. Commercial waste and rental property waste are not accepted.

Drop-Off & Disposal

Dean Forest Landfill & Bacon Park Transfer Station

The City of Savannah operates two facilities available to City residents (and, for Dean Forest, certain paid subscribers in unincorporated Chatham County) for excess waste, recyclables, and bulk items beyond what curbside collection handles.

🏭 Dean Forest Road Landfill

1327 Dean Forest Road, Savannah, GA 31401

Hours: Mon–Thu: 7 a.m.–4:15 p.m. • Fri: 7 a.m.–3:15 p.m. • Sat: 7 a.m.–2:45 p.m.

Closed: Sundays and all City holidays

Accepts: garbage, household recyclables, yard trash, excess dry trash, up to 4 tires per residence

Paid subscription service available for unincorporated Chatham County residents (fees apply; prepay at Revenue Dept.)

🏭 Bacon Park Transfer Station

6400 Skidaway Road (south of Bona Bella Ave.), Savannah, GA 31401

Hours: Wednesday–Sunday, 9 a.m.–4:45 p.m.

Closed: Mondays, Tuesdays, and all City holidays

City of Savannah residents only. Accepts: household recyclables, yard trash, excess dry trash, up to 4 tires per residence. No garbage or commercial waste.

⚠ Commercial waste and rental property waste are not accepted at either facility. This includes any waste generated from the management of rental property. City of Savannah residents must show proof of residency. The City reserves the right to reject any material deemed unsuitable.
Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Pickup Was Missed in Savannah

  1. Confirm your collection day using the 2026 Sanitation Collection Schedule calendar (download at savannahga.gov/sanitation). Remember: garbage and recycling share a day; yard waste is the day after. Confirm you are within City of Savannah limits.
  2. Check for a holiday delay. When a City holiday falls on Monday, all routes that week shift one day later. If your day was affected by a holiday, collection moved one day later. Always check the 2026 calendar for specific holiday adjustment dates.
  3. Verify set-out rules. Carts must have been at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day with at least 3 feet of separation from each other and from mailboxes/obstructions. Carts must be city-issued.
  4. Check for a fee/non-collection notice. Garbage overflow, bulk items placed out off schedule, yard waste in plastic bags, or yard waste piles taking more than 5 minutes may not be collected or may result in a fee notice rather than collection.
  5. Report the missed pickup by calling 311 or (912) 651-6565. You can also call the Residential Refuse Collection Department directly at (912) 651-6582.
Local Tips

Savannah Trash & Recycling Tips Every Resident Should Know

🏠 New to Savannah or Just Moved In?

Download the 2026 Sanitation Collection Schedule at savannahga.gov/sanitation to find your exact garbage, recycling, and yard waste days. After water service is established, call 311 to request your recycling cart (free). Garbage and recycling are collected the same day each week. Yard waste goes out the day after. Recycling is weekly — not every other week. Bulk items go out on your garbage day.

🌿 Yard Waste — Day After, Paper Bags Only

Savannah’s yard waste system is unique: it runs the day after garbage, not the same day. Paper bags are required — plastic bags will be left behind and may incur a fee. The 15-bag weekly limit is enforced; excess bags also incur a fee. Keep limb piles tidy and under 5 minutes of collection time to avoid charges.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Savannah Residents Make

  • Missing the yard waste day — it’s the day after garbage, not the same day
  • Using plastic bags for yard waste — only biodegradable paper bags are accepted
  • Thinking recycling is every other week — Savannah collects recycling every week
  • Placing bulk items outside the regular curb area (street, median, right-of-way) — this is illegal dumping
  • Leaving carts at the curb overnight — carts must be removed by 7:00 p.m. on collection day

🍰 St. Patrick’s Day — Savannah’s Biggest Event

Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration is one of the largest in the US. The Sanitation Department adjusts routes around the event each year. Watch for specific announcements at savannahga.gov/sanitation or follow @cityofsavannah for updates in mid-March.
