Holiday Schedule

Lexington Holiday Trash Collection Schedule 2026

Lexington observes 12 City holidays in 2026 with adjusted collection dates. The city’s system is unique: for many holidays, the makeup day precedes the holiday. Monday holidays typically have a makeup day the following Wednesday; Thursday and Friday holidays often have a makeup day the Wednesday before. The holiday for Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11) requires no makeup day, as Wednesday is used for makeups.

⚠ Critical: For many Lexington holidays, the makeup day comes BEFORE the holiday. Example: Christmas Eve (Thu, Dec 24) and Christmas Day (Fri, Dec 25) are both made up on Wednesday, Dec 23. Do not wait for a day after the holiday — your collection may have already happened. Sign up for text alerts at 888777 to receive automatic reminders.

Recycling — Blue Cart

Lexington Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Cart

Lexington uses single-stream recycling collected weekly in the blue cart on the same day as your other carts. Unlike most US cities, recycling is not every other week. Glass bottles and jars are accepted curbside in Lexington. All items must be loose, dry, and clean — never bagged. The Lexington Recycle Center serves Central Kentucky communities; not all items accepted in Lexington are accepted by partner communities.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Cart

  • Aluminum cans (soda, beer)
  • Steel cans, lids, and metal canisters (coffee, tea, cookies)

Yard Waste — Gray Cart

Lexington Yard Waste Collection — Gray Cart

Yard waste is collected weekly on the same day as your trash and recycling. Use your gray roll cart for leaves, grass clippings, branches, and other plant materials. Do not bag materials placed in the gray cart — they go in loose. Overflow goes in biodegradable paper yard waste bags placed next to the cart. Plastic bags are not accepted.

✅ Accepted in Gray Cart & Paper Bags

  • Leaves, grass clippings, yard trimmings
  • Branches and sticks (bundled with twine; check size requirements)
  • Dead plant materials, flowers, sod, mulch
  • Paper yard waste bags for overflow (available with coupons from City newsletter at Chevy Chase Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Meijer, Kroger, Walmart)
  • Christmas trees: natural trees curbside — remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, stand

🚫 Not in Gray Cart

  • Plastic bags of any kind → grocery store recycling
  • Food waste → green trash cart (compost not offered by City)
  • Pet waste → green trash cart
  • Rocks, soil, dirt
  • Treated or painted wood
  • Construction debris
⚠ Gray yard waste carts are NOT collected during some holiday weeks. During Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s holiday weeks, gray yard waste carts and loose bundles may not be collected. However, recycling, trash, and paper yard waste bags are still collected. Always check text alerts at 888777 during holiday weeks for yard waste updates.

Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Pickup Was Missed in Lexington

  1. Confirm your collection day using LexFind at lexingtonky.gov/living/waste-collection. Confirm you have City waste collection service (not a private hauler). Remember that trash, recycling, and yard waste are all collected on the same weekday.
  2. Check for a holiday adjustment. Lexington’s holiday system is unique — for many holidays, your collection moves to the Wednesday BEFORE the holiday, not after. Sign up for text alerts at 888777 to receive automatic notifications.
  3. Check set-out rules. Carts must be at the curb no earlier than 4:00 p.m. the night before and no later than 5:00 a.m. on collection day. Carts must be at least 3 feet apart and from all obstructions.
  4. Green cart: verify all material is bagged. Blue cart: verify recyclables are loose and only accepted items are included. Contaminated or improperly prepared carts may be skipped.
  5. If your cart was not picked up by 4:30 p.m. on your regular collection day, leave it at the curb and call LexCall at 311 or (859) 425-2255, or submit a service request online. Makeup trucks run on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Local Tips

Lexington Trash & Recycling Tips Every Resident Should Know

🏠 New to Lexington or Just Moved In?

Use LexFind at lexingtonky.gov/living/waste-collection to find your collection day. Text your day (MONDAY, TUESDAY, THURSDAY, or FRIDAY) to 888777 for automatic alerts. Your green, blue, and gray carts should already be at your address — if missing, call LexCall at 311. Glass bottles and jars are accepted in Lexington’s blue cart. Recycling is weekly here, not every other week.

📅 The Wednesday Makeup System

When a holiday falls on Monday, the City services your street on the following Wednesday. When it falls on Thursday or Friday, they often service you on the preceding Wednesday. The makeup is always on a Wednesday and may come before your normal collection day. This is why text alerts are so important in Lexington — they give you advance notice of each adjustment automatically.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Lexington Residents Make

  • Thinking recycling is every other week — Lexington collects recycling every week
  • Putting plastic yogurt cups, Styrofoam, or clamshells in the blue cart — only plastic #1 and #2 bottles/jugs/jars
  • Waiting for makeup collection after a Thursday/Friday holiday — the makeup day often came before the holiday
  • Not bagging trash in the green cart — all material in the green cart must be bagged
  • Leaving carts out overnight — carts must be removed by 7:00 p.m. on collection day

🌿 Composting in Lexington

The City does not offer a curbside food waste composting program. However, the yard waste gray cart accepts many organic garden materials. Residents interested in composting can start a home compost pile with plant-based food scraps, coffee grounds, banana peels, apple cores, leaves, and grass clippings. The City’s Live Green Lexington program provides composting information at lexingtonky.gov/yardwaste.
