Two-Cart System

Fargo’s Two-Cart System — Garbage & Recycling

Every Fargo residential address receives two city-issued carts. Both are collected on the same weekday. Garbage is collected every week; recycling is every other week on your designated Week A or B rotation. All garbage must be placed in city-issued carts — loose garbage outside carts will not be collected. Yard waste is banned from garbage carts and the landfill.

🗑

Garbage Cart — Gray/Black

All non-recyclable household waste. Volume-based program. Extra bags collected for a fee ($3/bag up to 33 gal) by calling 701.241.1449. No yard waste.

Weekly • City cart required

Recycling Cart — Blue

Single-stream: paper, cardboard, cans, plastics #1–7, glass, cartons. Collected separately from garbage truck on same day. Curbside by 8 a.m.

Every other week • Week A or B

⏰ Set-Out Rules — Both Carts

  • Place carts at the end of your driveway or in the alley by 8:00 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Remove carts from the boulevard by 6:00 p.m. on collection day (or after collection, whichever is later).
  • Carts must have 5 feet of space between them and all objects (walls, vehicles, trees, mailboxes). This allows the automated truck arm to grab and empty the cart.
  • During winter: do not place carts on top of snowbanks. Place in your driveway or a shoveled-out area on the boulevard.
  • Recycling is collected by a separate truck on a different route than garbage. Make sure your recycling cart is also out by 8:00 a.m.
  • Fireplace ashes: must be fully extinguished and placed in sealed bags before placing in your garbage cart.
Week A / Week B Recycling

Week A & Week B Recycling — How to Find Your Week

Fargo uses a two-week rotating recycling schedule. Every address is assigned to either Week A (white weeks on your 2026 calendar) or Week B (green weeks). To find your week, use the official schedule map or visit FargoRecycles.com. The 2026 Recycling Calendar (PDF) was mailed to all residents in late 2025.

⬜ Week A — White Weeks

Your recycling is collected on the white weeks of the 2026 Fargo Recycling Calendar.

2026 Cleanup Week: May 4–8 is a Week A (white) week.

⬛ Week B — Green Weeks

Your recycling is collected on the green weeks of the 2026 Fargo Recycling Calendar.

2026 Cleanup Week: May 11–15 is a Week B (green) week.

🔌 How to Find Your Week A or B

  • Use the official Recycling Collection Schedule Map at FargoND.gov/RecyclingSchedule — a downloadable PDF shows Week A/B by street.
  • Visit FargoRecycles.com to search by address.
  • Check your 2026 Fargo Recycling Calendar mailed to your home in late 2025. White weeks = Week A; green weeks = Week B.
  • Call Solid Waste at 701.241.1449 (Mon–Fri, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • There are also recycling drop-off sites available citywide for those who prefer to transport recyclables themselves.
💡 Recycling truck runs a separate route from the garbage truck. On your recycling week, both your garbage and recycling carts must be at the curb by 8:00 a.m. Recyclables are delivered to Minnkota Recycling in Fargo for processing.
Holiday Schedule

Fargo Holiday Collection Schedule 2026 — Early Collection for Some Weeks

Fargo’s holiday collection logic is unique and varies by holiday. For some holidays (Memorial Day, Labor Day), affected routes are collected one day later. For others (New Year’s, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas), routes earlier in the week are collected one day early. The Sanitary Landfill is closed on several holidays. Always verify at fargond.gov/holiday-schedule.

Yard Waste — Drop-Off Only

Yard Waste in Fargo — Banned from Landfill, Drop-Off Required

Yard waste (grass clippings, leaves, garden waste) is banned from Fargo’s Sanitary Landfill and must not be placed in your garbage cart. Instead, use the City’s yard waste drop-off sites (open spring through fall), compost at home, or take advantage of curbside fall leaf collection.

🌿 Yard Waste Drop-Off Sites (Spring–Fall)

Multiple locations citywide accept leaves, grass clippings, and garden waste (no branches) in spring, summer, and fall.

Only accepted materials: grass clippings, leaves, garden trimmings, excess fruit and vegetable scraps.

No branches — they damage equipment. No plastic bags; bags go in a separate receptacle at each site.

See site locations at fargond.gov/compost-yard-waste

🍂 Fall Curbside Leaf & Yard Waste Collection

Late October through mid-November: City crews collect yard waste from the boulevard with a separate truck.

Place yard waste in bags or cans, at least 5 feet from your garbage cart, on the boulevard.

Senior and disability assistance available for yard waste collection — call 701.241.1449.

🌿 Branch & Brush Collection

Forestry Department collects branches (under 10 inches diameter) from the boulevard every other week, May through last full week of September.

Collection coincides with your recycling day.

Brush can also be hauled free to the Fargo Landfill (Fargo residents with proof of residency).

🌿 Free Compost Giveaway

City of Fargo offers one free yard of compost to residents each spring and fall at the compost site (606 43½ St. N.).

Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Pickup Was Missed in Fargo

  1. Confirm your garbage and recycling days using the official map at FargoND.gov/RecyclingSchedule or FargoRecycles.com. Confirm whether this week is your Week A or B for recycling. Verify your address is in Fargo (not unincorporated Cass County).
  2. Check for a holiday adjustment. Fargo’s holiday logic varies — some holidays push collection EARLY (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, New Year’s); others push it one day LATER (Memorial Day, Labor Day). Verify at fargond.gov/holiday-schedule.
  3. Check winter set-out rules. Carts must not be placed on top of snowbanks. In winter, place your cart in your driveway or a shoveled-out area on the boulevard. Ensure 5 feet of clearance around the cart.
  4. Verify garbage was in the city-issued cart (not loose bags). Loose garbage outside carts will not be collected. Verify no yard waste was in the garbage cart.
  5. Report the missed pickup by calling Solid Waste at 701.241.1449 (Mon–Fri, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.) or email solidwaste@fargond.gov. You can also submit through FargoOne.com.
Local Tips

Fargo Trash & Recycling Tips Every Resident Should Know

🏠 New to Fargo or Just Moved In?

Confirm your garbage day using the Garbage Collection Schedule Map at fargond.gov and your Week A or B at FargoRecycles.com. Your city-issued garbage and recycling carts should be at your address — if missing, submit a cart request at FargoOne.com. Yard waste cannot go in your garbage cart or the landfill — use the seasonal drop-off sites. The free Residential Transfer Station (Building 4 at the Landfill) is available for large items year-round.

❄️ Winter Rules — Keep Paths Clear

During Fargo’s long winters, never place your garbage or recycling cart on a snowbank — the automated truck arm cannot reach it. Clear a shoveled-out space in your driveway or on the boulevard. Fireplace ashes must be fully extinguished and sealed in bags before going in the cart. Report any potholes or blocked alley issues that prevent collection to FargoOne.com.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Fargo Residents Make

  • Putting yard waste in the garbage cart — yard waste is banned from the landfill; use drop-off sites
  • Forgetting that Christmas and Independence Day collection runs early, not late — your garbage may be collected Wednesday instead of Thursday or Friday
  • Not checking their Week A or B for recycling — if the cart isn’t out on the right week, you wait two more weeks
  • Placing carts on snowbanks in winter — the automated arm can’t reach them
  • Putting plastic bags in the recycling cart — plastic bags jam the sorting machinery; never accepted curbside
