Two-Cart System

Providence’s Two-Cart System — Trash & Recycling

Every eligible Providence residence (buildings of 6 or fewer units) receives two city-issued carts: a gray trash cart and a “Big Green Can” recycling cart. In spring 2026, the City is replacing all carts with new 65-gallon models (deliveries began March 16, 2026). Both carts must be put out on collection day.

🗑

Gray Cart — Trash

All non-recyclable household waste. Lid must close. 65-gallon capacity (approx. 5 kitchen-size bags). All trash must be bagged. Never put loose garbage outside the cart.

Weekly • Mon–Fri

“Big Green Can” — Recycling

Single-stream recycling. All recyclables loose together. Mandatory by City Ordinance. 65-gallon capacity. No plastic bags. Cardboard flattened to fit with lid closed.

Weekly • Same day as trash

⏰ Set-Out Rules — Both Carts

  • Place carts at the curb no earlier than 4:00 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 4:00 a.m. on collection day.
  • Both carts must be put out — the recycling cart AND the trash cart. Failure to put out recycling may result in trash not being collected (“No Bin, No Barrel” policy).
  • Lids must be fully closed on both carts. Overfilled carts may not be collected.
  • All trash must be bagged inside the gray cart. Never place loose, unbagged trash outside the cart.
  • Keep trash carts away from rodent harborage. Report rodent sightings to DPW at (401) 467-7950.
  • New 2026 carts: All residents receiving curbside pickup are getting new 65-gallon trash and recycling carts in spring 2026. Check the delivery schedule at providenceri.gov/cart-delivery-map.
⚠ Mandatory Recycling

“No Bin, No Barrel” — Recycling Is Required by Law

Providence City Ordinance Section 12.61.2 makes recycling mandatory for all residents. Waste Management enforces a “No Bin, No Barrel” policy: if you do not put your recycling cart out on your collection day, you run the risk of your trash not being collected. Both carts must go out together every week.

💡 Always put both carts out, even if your recycling isn’t full. Providence’s mandatory recycling ordinance and the “No Bin, No Barrel” enforcement means you should put your Big Green Can out every week, even if it’s not full. Consistency protects you from having trash left behind.

🔊 Need a Cart or Need to Replace One?

Submit a cart request at providenceri.viewpointcloud.com (online form). Or contact DPW at (401) 680-7500. Both the gray trash cart and the Big Green Can recycling cart are provided free to eligible residents (buildings of 6 or fewer units).

Recycling — Big Green Can

Providence Recycling — What Goes in the Big Green Can

Providence uses single-stream curbside recycling (RecycleTogether RI program) — no sorting required. All accepted recyclables go together in the Big Green Can, loose and never bagged. For a complete guide, visit RecycleTogetherRI.com.

✅ Accepted in the Big Green Can

  • Aluminum, tin, and steel cans & lids
  • Paper: office paper, junk mail, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, paper bags, phone books (non-glued bindings)
  • Flattened cardboard — must fit inside the cart with lid closed
  • Glass bottles and jars — rinsed
  • Plastic bottles, jugs, tubs, and containers (all types, rinsed)
  • Cartons: milk, juice, broth, soup (rinsed)

🚫 Never in the Big Green Can

  • Plastic bags or plastic wrap → grocery store drop-off
  • Shredded paper → compost or trash
  • Clothing or textiles → donate or trash cart
  • Rechargeable batteries → Eco-Depot event
  • Electronics → e-waste drop-off
  • Food waste or food-soiled items
  • Yard waste → paper bags, separate collection
  • Construction materials → trash cart (small amounts only, lid must close)
  • Tanglers (hoses, cords, wires, textiles)
⚠ Textiles in recycling are a serious hazard. Clothing, sheets, towels, and other textiles must never go in the recycling cart. They get tangled in sorting equipment, causing facility shutdowns and worker safety hazards. Small textiles that can’t be donated go in the gray trash cart.
Yard Waste

Yard Debris Collection — Mid-April Through December

Yard waste is collected weekly as part of regular curbside service from mid-April through December. Place yard debris in brown paper debris bags or in your own container clearly labeled as yard debris (get a free yard debris sticker at DPW or the Mayor’s Center). Never use plastic bags for yard waste — they will not be collected. Never put yard debris in your recycling cart.

🌿 Yard Waste Rules

  • Use brown paper debris bags OR your own container with a free yard debris sticker
  • Get your free yard debris sticker at DPW Headquarters (75 Chapman St., 8 a.m.–4 p.m.) or the Mayor’s Center for City Services (25 Dorrance St., 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.)
  • Waste Management will empty and leave your labeled container at the curb
  • No plastic bags of any kind — yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected
  • Never put yard debris in your recycling cart
  • Season: approximately mid-April through December only

🎄 Christmas Tree Pickup

Christmas tree pickup starts the first Monday of January and continues for three weeks total. Remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, decorations, and stands. Trees must be placed at the curb on your regular trash day. No plastic bags on trees. Trees collected on your regular Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday pickup day during that three-week window.

Bulky Items

Providence residents in buildings with 6 or fewer units can have up to 3 bulky items per unit per week collected for free (except mattresses). 3. Place items at the curb in front of your residence with adequate sidewalk space. Do not block the sidewalk or street.
  4. Maximum of 3 items per unit per pickup. Buildings with more than 6 units are not eligible — contact your property manager.

  • Furniture: tables, chairs, bureaus, bedside stands, shelves, sofas

Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste — RIRRC Eco-Depot Events

Household hazardous waste (paint, motor oil, batteries, pesticides, etc.) cannot go in trash or recycling carts. Providence partners with the RI Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) for free eco-depot drop-off events. Appointments are required for eco-depot events. Paint and tires are also considered hazardous materials.

⚠ Eco-Depot Events — Free, Appointment Required

  • Visit ecodepotri.org or call (401) 942-1430 x3241 to find dates, locations, and schedule your appointment.
  • Accepted: mercury devices, motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, paint (oil-based), gasoline, pesticides, herbicides, fluorescent bulbs (CFL), rechargeable batteries, sharps/needles, and other toxic or flammable household materials.
  • Tire disposal: Bring tires to RI Resource Recovery’s small vehicle area. Fee: $8 per tire. Paint and tires are never accepted in trash or recycling carts.
Overflow Trash

Overflow Trash Bag Program — Extra Bags Available

All garbage must fit inside the gray trash cart with the lid fully closed. If you have extra bags that don’t fit, Providence offers an Overflow Trash Bag Program:

🔋 How to Handle Extra Trash

  • Small amounts of construction material (drywall, small lumber scraps) from household projects can go in your trash cart (lid must close; never in recycling). Contractors may not use residential carts.
  • Small appliances that fit in the cart with the lid closed can go in the trash cart if not in working condition.
  • For a larger volume of excess trash, consider scheduling a bulky item pickup through Waste Management (1-800-972-4545).
  • Contact DPW at (401) 680-7500 for guidance on overflow situations.
Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Pickup Was Missed in Providence

  1. Confirm your collection day using the official address lookup at providenceri.gov/waste-pickup-schedule. Confirm you are in an eligible building (6 or fewer units).
  2. Check for a holiday delay. Providence has 11 holidays in 2026 that cause one-day delays — including Victory Day (Mon, Aug 10) which is unique to Rhode Island. If a holiday fell on your day, your pickup shifted one day later for the whole week.
  3. Verify both carts were out. The “No Bin, No Barrel” policy means if your recycling cart was not out, your trash may have been intentionally skipped. Both carts must be placed at the curb together.
  4. Check cart set-out time. Carts must be out no earlier than 4:00 p.m. the day before and no later than 4:00 a.m. on collection day. Lids must be fully closed.
  5. Report the missed pickup by calling Waste Management at 800-972-4545. You can also contact DPW at (401) 680-7500 or report through PVD 311 at providenceri.gov/pvd-311.

🇪🇸 Victory Day — Rhode Island’s Unique Holiday

Victory Day (2nd Monday in August) is observed only in Rhode Island — no other US state celebrates it. In 2026, it falls on Monday, August 10. All Monday routes shift to Tuesday, and the rest of the week follows a one-day delay through Saturday. If you’ve moved here from another state, this holiday may catch you off guard.

  • Putting clothing or textiles in the recycling cart — causes facility shutdowns and safety hazards; always donate or trash them
  • Placing bulky items at the curb without scheduling through Waste Management first — items will be left behind without an appointment
  • Forgetting Victory Day (August 10) causes a one-day delay
  • Using plastic bags for yard waste — they will not be collected; use paper bags or a labeled container only
