⏰ Basic Detroit Rules

  • Set all material at the curbline in front of your own home.
  • Do not place material in front of another home, vacant lot, or neighboring property.
  • Set items out after 6:00 p.m. the evening before collection and by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
  • Remove containers from the curb after collection.
  • For missed service on your collection day, contact your assigned hauler first; after service day, call DPW.
Set-Out Rules

Detroit Curbline Set-Out Rules

Detroit requires residents to place all material in front of their own property and keep different waste streams separated so crews can collect safely and efficiently.

📍 Placement Rules

Trash, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste should be placed at the curbline in front of your own home.

Do not intermingle bulk items with yard waste, recycling, or regular trash.

⚠ Timing Rules

Set out no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before and no later than 7 a.m. on pickup day.

Late set-outs may not be collected until your next scheduled service day.

💡 Detroit uses two haulers by geography. Priority Waste serves the east side and southwest Detroit; Waste Management serves the west side. If your items were missed on service day, contact your hauler first.

Curbside Recycling

Detroit Recycling — What’s Accepted

Detroit offers free weekly curbside recycling to single-family homes and residential buildings with 1–4 units. Recycling should be placed loose in the cart — never in plastic bags. Containers should be empty, clean, and dry.

✅ Accepted in Detroit Recycling

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Books and mixed paper
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Metal cans
  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Flattened cardboard boxes
  • Clean, dry recyclables placed loose in the cart

🚫 Never in the Recycling Cart

  • Plastic bags or bagged recyclables
  • Food and liquids
  • Paper towels, paper plates, and napkins
  • Soft plastic film, sandwich bags, chip bags, bubble wrap
  • Wood and yard waste
  • Electronics, light bulbs, and batteries
  • Hazardous materials
⚠ Detroit recycling is bag-free. Plastic bags are not accepted in curbside recycling. If you bag recyclables, crews may leave the cart uncollected.

🚪 Need a Recycling Cart?

Detroit residents can request a free recycling cart through the City’s Detroit Recycles program, or pay a fee to order one directly from their hauler. Recycle Here! also serves apartment residents and others without curbside recycling access.

Yard Waste

Detroit Yard Waste Collection 2026

Detroit’s 2026 yard waste season runs from March 30 through December 19. Yard waste is collected weekly on your scheduled collection day during this period.

🌿 Yard Waste Rules

  • Accepted: leaves, grass clippings, shrubs, and small twigs.
  • Use biodegradable paper bags or a personal container clearly labeled “yard waste” on two sides.
  • Branches and twigs should be bundled and tied securely.
  • Bundles must be up to 4 feet long; small twigs/leaves should follow City bagging guidance.
  • No plastic bags for yard waste.
💡 Keep yard waste separated. Yard waste is collected by a separate truck. If it is mixed with bulk or trash, it may be left behind.
Bulk Pickup

Detroit Bulk Pickup Rules

Detroit collects bulk items weekly on your scheduled service day. Bulk items should be placed at the curbline away from trash containers, recycling, and yard waste.

📅 Bulk Set-Out Rules

  1. Place bulk items at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before pickup and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day.
  2. Keep bulk separate from trash, yard waste, and recycling.
  3. Do not exceed 2 cubic yards total or 1,000 pounds.
  4. Each item, bag, or bundle should stay within Detroit’s posted size and weight guidance.

✅ Common Accepted Bulk Items

  • Furniture
  • Mattresses
  • Appliances
  • Hot water tanks
  • Carpeting
  • Large toys
  • Some properly prepared renovation materials

🚫 Not Accepted as Standard Bulk

  • Oversized set-outs above City limits
  • Construction debris at standard free drop-off sites
  • Commercial waste
  • Hazardous materials
  • Mixed or improperly separated waste streams
⚠ Detroit can fine oversized or non-compliant bulk set-outs. Bulk totals above City limits may not be collected and can trigger significant fines.
Free Drop-Off

Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Detroit

  1. Confirm your address and collection day using Detroit’s Waste Pickup Schedule tool.

  3. Verify placement and timing: curbline in front of your own home, after 6 p.m. the night before, by 7 a.m. on pickup day.
  4. Keep waste streams separated. Bulk, trash, recycling, and yard waste should not be mixed together.
  5. Call your hauler on service day — Priority Waste for east side/southwest Detroit, Waste Management for west side. If it is after service day, call DPW at 313-876-0004.
