Wichita Waste Collection — Quick Facts

Wichita operates a competitive free-market solid waste system. The City does not collect residential trash — instead, residents choose from a list of City-permitted private haulers. All permitted haulers are required by City ordinance (enacted 2012) to offer single-stream curbside recycling and a smaller cart size option. Your pickup day, recycling schedule, pricing, and holiday policy depend on which hauler you choose.

⚠ Wichita has NO city-provided residential trash collection. All residential waste collection is handled by private, City-permitted haulers. You must choose your own hauler and set up service directly with them. The City’s role is to regulate, permit, and require that all haulers offer recycling. If you have no hauler, you have no service.
How the System Works

How Wichita’s Competitive Trash System Works

Unlike most large US cities where the municipality collects trash, Wichita operates a free-market model established by City ordinance in 2012. Residents and property owners select any City-permitted hauler, negotiate their own service agreement, and pay the hauler directly. The City maintains the list of permitted haulers and enforces minimum service standards, but does not set your pickup day or bill you for service.

📝 What the City Requires All Haulers to Offer

  • Single-stream curbside recycling as an available service option — all permitted haulers must offer it
  • A smaller cart size option at a lower rate (for residents who generate less waste)
  • A valid City permit decal displayed on both sides of every collection truck

If a permitted hauler refuses to offer you single-stream recycling or a smaller cart, contact the City’s Environmental Health Division at 316-268-8351.

🚚 Getting Started — How to Set Up Trash Service

  1. Visit wichita.gov/700/Solid-Waste-Recycling-Program to find the current list of all permitted residential and commercial haulers in Wichita.
  2. Contact multiple haulers, compare rates, cart size options, recycling availability, and pickup days for your address.
  3. Sign up directly with your chosen hauler. They will deliver your cart(s) and establish your pickup day.
  4. Look for the City of Wichita permit decal on both sides of the truck to confirm your hauler is licensed. If no decal is visible, contact Environmental Health at 316-268-8351.
💡 Compare rates using the City’s quarterly survey data. The City of Wichita publishes resident-submitted quarterly trash rate data in Excel and PDF formats at wichita.gov/solid-waste. Use this to benchmark what others are paying and negotiate with haulers.
Permitted Haulers

Wichita Permitted Trash Haulers — Who to Contact

The following are among the most widely used permitted haulers in Wichita. This list is not exhaustive — the City maintains the full, current list of all permitted haulers at wichita.gov/solid-waste. ⏰ General Set-Out Guidelines (Confirm with Your Hauler)

  • Place carts at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day (some haulers require earlier).
  • Handles facing toward your property; lids fully closed.
  • At least 3 feet of clearance around carts from vehicles, mailboxes, utility poles, and other obstacles.
  • Do not overfill carts — lids should close completely.
  • Remove carts from the curb promptly after collection.
⚠ Always verify decal on the truck. A City of Wichita permit decal must be displayed on both sides of every permitted waste hauler’s truck. If your hauler’s truck does not have a decal, or if they refuse to offer you recycling, contact Environmental Health at 316-268-8351.
Holiday Schedule

Wichita Holiday Trash Collection Schedule 2026

Because Wichita uses private haulers, holiday schedules vary by hauler. There is no single city-wide holiday policy. Most major haulers observe the same federal holidays and typically delay pickup by one day for the remainder of the week when a holiday falls on a weekday. Always contact your hauler directly for their specific 2026 holiday schedule, or check their website or app for updates.

Recycling

Wichita Recycling — What Goes in the Cart

All City-permitted haulers are required to offer single-stream curbside recycling. All recyclables go together in one cart — no sorting required. Recycling is typically collected weekly, on the same day as trash, though some haulers may collect biweekly — confirm with yours. The Wichita MRF (Material Recovery Facility), operated by Waste Connections, processes recyclables from local haulers. Do not put plastic bags in curbside recycling bins.

✅ Accepted in the Recycling Cart

  • Paper: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper, catalogs, phone books
  • Cardboard — flatten boxes before placing in cart
  • Chipboard: cereal boxes, shoe boxes, soda packaging (flatten)
  • Paperboard cans: chip cans, mixed nut containers, biscuit cans
  • Aluminum, tin, and steel cans (rinsed)
  • Glass bottles and jars (rinsed) — accepted curbside in Wichita

  • Lids can be left on containers; no need to wash (just rinse)
  • Greasy pizza boxes can be recycled (remove large food chunks)

🚫 Never in the Recycling Cart

  • Plastic bags or film → grocery store drop-off (Kroger, Walmart, etc.)
  • Styrofoam / polystyrene (clean Styrofoam blocks: Foam Fabricators drop-off)

Bulk & Large Item Disposal

Bulk & Large Item Disposal Options in Wichita

Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Wichita

  1. Confirm your pickup day and recycling schedule with your hauler directly. Because schedules vary by hauler and route, only your hauler can confirm your exact day.
  2. Check for a holiday. Contact your hauler to confirm their specific 2026 holiday schedule. Most major haulers delay pickup by one day when a holiday falls on a weekday.
  3. Verify cart placement: carts out by 7:00 a.m. (or your hauler’s required time), lids closed, handles facing your property, 3 feet of clearance around the cart.
  4. Contact your hauler directly to report the missed pickup. Use the phone number on your hauler’s website or your billing statement. Do not contact the City of Wichita — the City does not collect residential trash and cannot resolve service issues.
  5. If your hauler is unresponsive or does not resolve the issue, contact the City’s Environmental Health Division at 316-268-8351 to report a service concern with a permitted hauler.
⚠ Do NOT contact the City of Wichita to report a missed pickup. The City does not collect residential trash. All missed pickup reports must go directly to your private hauler. The City only intervenes if a hauler refuses to offer required services (recycling or smaller cart options) or is operating without a permit.

🌞 Tornadoes & Severe Weather

  • Contact your hauler for updates on service suspension or delays in affected areas.
  • Do not mix storm debris with regular trash — haulers may not accept large quantities of storm debris in regular carts.
  • For large volumes of storm debris (tree branches, damaged materials), self-haul to Brooks Landfill (4100 N. West St.) or contact your hauler for special pickup options.
  • Brooks Landfill accepts yard waste and tree debris by weight.
