Three Collection Streams

Trash, Recycling & Yard Debris — Three Streams, One Day

Every Virginia Beach household with curbside service has three collection streams all picked up on the same weekday: weekly trash (black cart), biweekly recycling (blue cart), and weekly yard debris (clear bags or bundled). Trash and recycling use 95-gallon roll-out carts; yard debris does not require a container. Carts are not provided free — they must be purchased for $75 each (blue recycling carts are available free upon request).

🗑

Black Cart — Trash

Bagged household waste only. Lids must close. All trash inside cart. Weekly, automated collection.

Weekly • $75 cart purchase

Blue Cart — Recycling

Paper, cardboard, glass, plastic bottles, metal cans, food/beverage cartons. Loose, never bagged. Every other week.

Biweekly • Free cart
🌿

Yard Debris — Curbside

Clear plastic bags (max 25 lbs each, max 25 bags) or bundled limbs. Up to 2 piles of limbs per collection day. Weekly, no container needed.

Weekly • No container required

⏰ Set-Out Rules — All Carts & Debris

  • Place carts and yard debris curbside between 5:00 p.m. the day before and 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
  • At least 3 feet of clearance on all sides from other containers, yard waste, limbs, mailboxes, cable boxes, vehicles, and utility poles.
  • Do not place carts under low-hanging wires or tree limbs.
  • Cart lids must close securely. Overflowing carts will not be collected.
  • Trash should be bagged before being placed in the black cart to reduce litter.
  • Remove carts from the curbside and out of public view by end of your collection day.
  • Place yard debris a few inches away from the curb, outside the drainage flow line, to prevent neighborhood flooding.
💡 Carts are not free in Virginia Beach. Unlike many cities, black trash carts must be purchased for $75 each (includes free delivery, 10-year warranty). Blue recycling carts are available free upon request. Contact Waste Management at (757) 385-4650 or email wastemgt@vbgov.com to order. Label all carts with your address.

Virginia Beach Holiday Collection Schedule 2026

When collection is affected, typically only Thursday routes shift — and usually to Saturday. Recycling — Blue Cart

Virginia Beach Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Cart

Virginia Beach uses single-stream recycling in the blue cart, collected every other week on the same day as trash. Your address is on either a Week A or Week B rotation. All items must be clean, empty, and placed loose in the cart — never in plastic bags. Unlike some cities, Virginia Beach accepts glass in the curbside blue cart. Use the Find My Trash Day tool on the official site to confirm your next recycling week.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Cart

  • Paper: newspapers, magazines, mail, office paper, paper bags, phone books
  • Cardboard — flattened/broken down before placing in cart
  • Aluminum and steel cans (rinsed)
  • Glass bottles and jars (rinsed) — accepted curbside
  • Plastic bottles only (rinsed) — not all plastics, bottles only
  • Food and beverage cartons: milk, juice, soup, broth
  • Shredded paper — loose in cart (not bagged)
  • Townhome residents with 18-gallon bins: additional recyclables in paper bags next to the bin

🚫 Never in the Blue Cart

  • Plastic bags or film → grocery store drop-off
  • All plastics except bottles — no tubs, trays, or #3–#7 containers
  • Styrofoam / polystyrene
  • Rechargeable batteries or lithium-ion batteries → Landfill & RRC
  • Electronics → Landfill & RRC
  • Appliances → bulky item pickup or Landfill & RRC
  • Propane tanks & fuel canisters → Landfill & RRC
  • Hazardous waste → Landfill HHW
  • Ceramics, sheet glass, mirrors, ovenware
  • Automotive parts
💡 Plastic bottles only — not all plastics. Virginia Beach only accepts plastic bottles in the blue cart. Just because an item has a recycling symbol doesn’t mean it belongs in the cart. Plastic tubs, trays, bags, and non-bottle containers do not go in the blue cart. When in doubt, leave it out.

🚩 Recycling Drop-Off Locations

In addition to curbside service, residents can drop off recyclables at two locations. Both accept the same items as the curbside blue cart. Flatten all cardboard boxes before dropping off.

  • Landfill & Resource Recovery Center Recycling Drop-Off: 1989 Jake Sears Road • Tue–Sat, 7 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  • West Neck Recycling Center: 2500 West Neck Road, Municipal Center (between Nimmo Pkwy & North Landing Rd) • Mon–Sat, 7 a.m.–4:30 p.m. • No trailers permitted.
Yard Debris

Virginia Beach Yard Debris Pickup — Rules & Limits

Yard debris is collected weekly on your regular trash day. No container or work order is required — simply place debris at the curbside following the rules below. Place yard debris a few inches away from the curb to keep the drainage flow line clear.

🌿 What & How Much Will Be Collected

  • Leaves and grass clippings: Up to 25 clear plastic bags per collection day, maximum 25 lbs per bag. Bags must be clear/transparent — not opaque trash bags.
  • Limbs and branches: Up to two piles per collection day. Each pile up to 4×4×4 feet. Limbs must be 4 feet or less in length and 6 inches or less in diameter.
  • Keep yard debris at least 3 feet from carts, mailboxes, and other obstacles.
  • Do not place yard debris in the street or blocking the sidewalk.
  • Debris from work done by private contractors must be disposed of by the contractor — it will not be collected.
  • Tree removal debris (from full tree removal) is not collected at curbside. Use the Yard Debris Container rental program.

🚚 Yard Debris Container Rental Program

For larger amounts of yard debris (major cleanups, large trimming jobs), roll-off containers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis:

  • Fee: $40 weekdays$75 weekends
  • Container size: 13×7×5 feet
  • Accepted: tree limbs under 6 inches in diameter, leaves, shrubbery, grass trimmings from normal upkeep of your occupied dwelling. No clear plastic bags inside the container.
  • Not accepted in container: limbs over 6 inches diameter, root balls, sod, hazardous waste, stumps, firewood, concrete, dirt, bricks, building materials, pallets, or compost.
  • Schedule by calling (757) 385-4650 at least one week in advance.
💡 Consider mulch mowing instead. Virginia Beach encourages residents to mulch mow leaves and grass clippings directly into the lawn rather than bagging and dragging them to the curb. This feeds the lawn naturally and reduces the volume of yard debris collections.
Bulky Item Pickup

Virginia Beach Bulky / Large Item Pickup

Virginia Beach residents who receive curbside services may schedule free curbside large item pickup through VB311. Items too large to fit in the black trash cart and that cannot be transported to the Landfill & Resource Recovery Center qualify. Residents are encouraged to accumulate multiple items before scheduling rather than making multiple single-item requests.

📅 How to Schedule Bulky Item Pickup

  1. Submit a request online at vb311.virginiabeach.gov, via the VB Works mobile app, by phone at (757) 385-4650, or by email at wastemgt@vbgov.com. Request at least two weeks before your regular trash pickup day.
  2. Wait for confirmation before placing items at the curb. Requests may take 48–72 hours for a response. Do not place items at the curb until a confirmed collection date has been received.
  3. Set out items no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before your confirmed collection date and by 7 a.m. the day of service.
  4. Place items just behind the curb line in front of your home. Do not place in the street, on the sidewalk, or in any way that interferes with traffic or waste collection service.
  5. Keep items at least 3 feet from carts, yard waste, mailboxes, vehicles, and utility poles.

✅ Accepted Bulky Items

  • Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers, bed frames
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Large appliances (freon must be removed from AC/fridge/freezer — label accordingly)
  • Lawn mowers and pressure washers (drain all fuel first)
  • TVs and monitors
  • Carpeting, rugs (rolled up)
  • Fencing (disassembled), doors, sinks, toilets

🚫 Not Accepted Curbside

  • Construction or demolition debris → Landfill
  • Hazardous materials → Landfill HHW
  • Yard debris → separate curbside yard debris service
  • Commercial or business waste
  • Car parts, tires (4 per visit at Landfill instead)
  • Items from private contractors
💡 Alternatively, drop off directly at the Landfill. If your item is eligible and you can transport it, the Landfill & Resource Recovery Center at 1989 Jake Sears Road accepts furniture, appliances, metals, and more — free for Virginia Beach residents (proof of residency required). Open Tuesday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Virginia Beach

  1. Confirm your collection day and recycling week — use the VBgov Map at pw.virginiabeach.gov/trash-recycling or the VB Works app. Confirm your property is within Virginia Beach city limits and receiving City-provided curbside service.
  2. Check for a holiday or schedule change. Some holidays shift Friday routes to Saturday or Thursday routes to Saturday. Verify at pw.virginiabeach.gov or sign up for VB Connect alerts.
  3. Verify cart or debris placement: carts out between 5 p.m. day before and 7 a.m. on collection day; 3 feet of clearance on all sides; lids closed; not overflowing; trash bagged inside the cart.
  4. Report the missed pickup on your collection day or by noon the following business day via email at wastemgt@vbgov.com or by calling (757) 385-4650. You can also report via VB311 at vb311.virginiabeach.gov.

🌊 Coastal & Storm Considerations

  • Virginia Beach is a coastal city with frequent flooding. Always place yard debris and carts a few inches away from the curb, outside the drainage flow line, to keep water flowing freely.
  • After major storms, check pw.virginiabeach.gov for debris removal announcements and special collection instructions.
  • Secure cart lids in advance of wind events. Overflowing or open-lid carts will not be collected.

🚫 5 Common Mistakes Virginia Beach Residents Make

  • Putting non-bottle plastics in the blue cart — only plastic bottles are accepted, not tubs, trays, or bags
  • Forgetting that recycling is every other week — confirm your A/B week using the VBgov Map or VB Works app
  • Placing bulky items at the curb without first receiving a confirmed collection date from VB311
  • Using opaque trash bags for yard debris — leaves and clippings must be in clear plastic bags only
  • Scheduling single-item bulky pickups — the City encourages accumulating multiple items before requesting pickup
