The Two-Cart System

Milwaukee’s Brown & Blue Carts — Rules & Placement

Milwaukee provides two City-issued carts to all eligible households. Both are collected on the same weekday: the brown cart every week, the blue cart every other week.

🗑

🧲 Brown Cart — GARBAGE

All household garbage. 96-gallon capacity. All garbage must be bagged in tied plastic bags inside the cart. Loose garbage inside the cart will not be collected.

Lid must be fully closed. Open lids = no collection.

Weekly • 96-gallon

🔵 Blue Cart — RECYCLING

All recyclables. 64-gallon capacity. Items must be placed loose — never in bags. Lid must be fully closed.

Collected every other week on the same day as garbage.

Every other week • 64-gallon

⏰ Set-Out Rules — All Milwaukee Addresses

  • Place carts at the collection point by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. Your collection point is either the curb line or the alley line — determined by your address. Confirm yours in the schedule lookup or call 414-286-CITY.
  • Do not set carts out before 6:00 p.m. the evening before your collection day.
  • Return both carts to proper storage by 10:00 p.m. on your collection day. Leaving carts at the collection point overnight is a City ordinance violation.
  • Leave at least 3 feet of clearance between carts, and between carts and any mailboxes, cars, trees, utility poles, or other obstacles.
  • Keep a clear path to carts — free from snow, ice, and any other obstruction. Inaccessible carts will be skipped. This is especially important November through March.
  • ASL (Automated Side Loader) trucks serve some Milwaukee addresses. If your cart is collected by an ASL truck: the lid must open toward the street or alley, and the handle must be closest to your home. Check your schedule lookup to see if ASL service applies to your address.
Holiday Schedule

Milwaukee Holiday Collection Schedule 2026

When your regular collection day falls on a City-observed holiday, collection shifts one day later for the remainder of that week. For example, if your day is Monday and Monday is a holiday, your collection moves to Tuesday that week. Friday routes move to Saturday.

Always verify your exact adjusted date using the address lookup at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/schedules — holiday adjustments appear in your personalized schedule. Sign up for Sanitation Notifications to receive an automatic alert the day before your adjusted collection date.

⛄️ Weather suspensions happen in Milwaukee. On Monday, March 16, 2026, all garbage and recycling collection was suspended citywide as equipment and staff were redirected to snow and ice control operations. When a suspension is announced, leave carts at the collection point and keep them accessible (clear snow and ice) until crews return. Do not report a missed pickup during an active suspension — wait for the DPW announcement that collection has resumed.
Recycling — Blue Cart

Milwaukee Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Cart

Milwaukee uses single-stream recycling in the 64-gallon blue cart, collected every other week on the same day as garbage. Your address is assigned to either Week A or Week B — confirm yours in the schedule lookup. All items must be clean, empty, dry, and placed loose. Never bag recyclables. The blue cart lid must be fully closed for collection.

For any item you’re unsure about, use Milwaukee’s free Recycling Directory at city.milwaukee.gov/recycle/what/Recycling-Directory — search any item to find the correct disposal method.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Cart

  • Paper: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office paper, paperback books, shredded paper (in sealed paper bag)
  • Cardboard: corrugated boxes (flattened), cereal boxes, paperboard — dry only
  • Cartons: milk, juice, broth, soup cartons
  • Aluminum and steel (tin) cans — rinsed
  • Glass: bottles and jars (all colors) — rinsed
  • Rigid plastic containers: bottles, jugs, tubs, and containers — rinsed
  • Empty aerosol cans (steel or aluminum)

🚫 Never in the Blue Cart

  • Plastic bags or film → retail store drop-off
  • Styrofoam / polystyrene → Drop-Off Centers
  • Food, liquids, or food-soiled containers
  • Electronics → Drop-Off Centers (fee for TVs) or MMSD events
  • Batteries → MMSD HHW sites
  • Tanglers: cords, hoses, wire hangers
  • Any recyclables in bags of any kind
💡 Recycling week shifted by weather in 2026. During periods of weather-related suspension, recycling collection may be pushed to the following week. If your blue cart wasn’t collected during a snow event, check the schedule lookup for your updated next recycling date — it may have moved from its regular A/B cycle.
Bulk Items

Milwaukee Bulk Item Pickup — Regular Weekly & Prepaid Stickers

Milwaukee offers two tiers of bulk item pickup. The first is a straightforward weekly allowance included in standard service. The second tier requires prepaid disposal stickers for certain item types.

✅ Tier 1: Up to 1 Cubic Yard — No Appointment, No Fee

On every regular garbage collection day, Milwaukee residents may place up to 1 cubic yard of bulk items at the collection point alongside their brown garbage cart — no appointment needed and no fee. One cubic yard is roughly the size of a standard washing machine or a small armchair. Items must be placed at the curb or alley line (same as your regular carts) by 7:00 a.m.

📦 Tier 2: Over 1 Cubic Yard or Special Items — Prepaid Stickers Required

For bulk items that exceed 1 cubic yard, or for the specific item types listed below, a prepaid disposal sticker is required. Stickers can be purchased at Milwaukee City Hall and other authorized locations. The fee varies by item type. Call 414-286-CITY (2489) for current sticker prices and locations.

  • Mattresses and box springs — prepaid sticker required per item. Must be tagged before placement at the collection point.
  • Large appliances (washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, AC units) — prepaid sticker required. Refrigerators and freezers must have doors removed or secured open.
  • Electronics (TVs, computers, monitors) — prepaid sticker required for curbside, OR take to a Drop-Off Center (fee applies for TVs).
  • Items over 1 cubic yard — contact DPW at 414-286-2489 to schedule and pay for special pickup.
⚠ Mattresses and appliances require prepaid stickers. Placing a mattress, large appliance, or electronics at the curb without a prepaid disposal sticker may result in the item being left, a code enforcement notice, or a fine. Purchase stickers before placing items out. Call 414-286-CITY for sticker purchase locations and current prices.
Project Clean & Green

Project Clean & Green 2026 — Annual Spring Bulk Cleanup

Milwaukee’s Project Clean & Green is the City’s annual spring bulk item collection program. Once per year, each zone gets a designated week when residents can set out up to 6 cubic yards per dwelling unit of unwanted items for free collection — with no prepaid stickers required. The 2026 program begins on April 21, with different zones assigned to different weeks throughout spring.

📅 2026 Project Clean & Green — Key Dates & Rules

  • First zone starts: April 21, 2026. The program runs zone-by-zone each week through late spring.
  • Your specific zone date will be available in mid-March 2026 in the official schedule lookup at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/schedules. Look up your address and scroll down to see your Clean & Green date.
  • Service is on your regular garbage collection day of the week for your zone. Residents should have items at their regular collection point (curb or alley line) by 7:00 a.m. of their assigned Project Clean & Green day.
  • In most cases, everything will be picked up on garbage collection day. Allow through the following business day for all items to be collected — crews may need extra time for large volumes.
  • Maximum: 6 cubic yards per dwelling unit (roughly the size of a large moving van load).
  • For any yard waste included in Clean & Green: must be in brown paper yard waste bags (available at area hardware and garden stores). This is the only City-sponsored curbside collection of yard waste bags all year.
  • Items must be placed along the area between the sidewalk and curb (not in the street), on the lawn edge if there is no sidewalk, or at the end of the driveway. For alley collection: place at the alley line.
  • Available for 1–4 dwelling unit residences serviced by the City of Milwaukee only.
⚠ Mattresses, appliances, and electronics during Clean & Green: Prepaid disposal stickers are still required for mattresses, appliances, and electronics during Project Clean & Green. The 6-cubic-yard allowance covers furniture, yard waste, and general household items, but the sticker requirement for special items is not waived during Clean & Green week.
💡 Check your zone date in mid-March. Zone assignments are not announced in advance — they become available in mid-March in the schedule lookup. Look up your address at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/schedules in mid to late March 2026 to see your exact Clean & Green week.
Brush & Yard Waste

Milwaukee Brush Collection & Yard Waste

Milwaukee offers on-request brush collection from April through November. This service is for tree and shrub trimmings — woody stalks and branches. Yard waste bags are only collected during the annual Project Clean & Green week.

🌿 Brush Collection Rules

  • Submit a brush collection request online at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation or call 414-286-2489. Crews will schedule pickup within a reasonable time after your request.
  • Place brush at the curb or alley line between the sidewalk and curb (not in the street).
  • Maximum 2 cubic yards per request (approximately the size of a couch or small sofa).
  • Branches must be no longer than 4 feet and no larger than 6 inches in diameter. Larger stumps or logs are not accepted.
  • Brush collection is only available April through November. During winter months, woody debris must wait for the following spring or be dropped off at a Drop-Off Center (free with basic recyclables).

🍂 Yard Waste Bags — Project Clean & Green Only

Curbside collection of yard waste bags (grass clippings, leaves, garden trimmings in paper bags) is provided only during your assigned Project Clean & Green week. This is the only City-sponsored opportunity for bag yard waste pickup at the curb during the year. Outside of Clean & Green week, yard waste in bags must be taken to a Drop-Off Center.

Always use brown paper yard waste bags (available at area hardware and garden stores). Plastic bags, even biodegradable ones, are not accepted for yard waste.

Drop-Off Centers

Milwaukee Drop-Off Centers — Self-Haul, Seasonal

The City of Milwaukee operates Drop-Off Centers where residents and property owners can self-haul a wide variety of waste materials. Centers are open Tuesday through Sunday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during the seasonal operating period (approximately April through November; closed December through March). Hours may vary — confirm current operating status at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/DropOff.

🔌 What’s Accepted & Pricing

  • Normal recyclables and scrap metal: FREE regardless of volume (cardboard, paper, glass, cans, rigid plastics, metals)
  • Yard waste, brush, and wood: fees apply by load size (determined by staff at entry)
  • Bulk furniture and household items: fees apply by load size
  • Televisions: fee charged per unit regardless of cubic yard size — TVs have a separate per-item fee
  • Tires: currently FREE (fee waived as of most recent update, limit 5 tires per visit)
  • Wood chips from City Forestry pruning operations: available at no cost at each location (availability not guaranteed)

The payment booth accepts cash, debit, and all major credit cards. Load sizes are approximated by staff and are non-negotiable. Staff may deny access based on load type, vehicle type, or conduct.

⚠ Drop-Off Centers are closed December through early April. During winter months, all Drop-Off Centers are closed. Materials that cannot wait must be handled through other options (curbside bulk with sticker, MMSD HHW events, or private disposal). The 2026 seasonal opening was approximately April 5, 2025 in prior years — check city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/DropOff for the 2026 opening date.
HHW & Hazardous Waste

Milwaukee HHW — MMSD Home Hazmat Collection

Household hazardous waste (HHW) in Milwaukee is managed by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) through its Home Hazmat Collection program. MMSD operates three permanent collection sites and hosts 1-day drop-off events throughout the Milwaukee County area. Confirmed 2026 event: MLK Jr. School, April 18, 2026.

📍 MMSD Home Hazmat — How to Find Sites & Events

All sites and events are available to Milwaukee County residents. Visit mmsd.com/home-hazmat-collection for:

  • Current permanent site addresses and hours
  • Full 2026 1-day event schedule (events throughout spring and fall)
  • Complete accepted materials list
  • Drive-thru format: stay in your vehicle; place items in trunk or near hatchback

✅ Accepted at MMSD HHW Sites

  • Oil-based paints, stains, and varnishes
  • Motor oil and automotive fluids
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and pool chemicals
  • Solvents, thinners, and cleaning chemicals
  • Rechargeable and button cell batteries
  • Fluorescent and CFL bulbs
  • Antifreeze and brake fluid
  • Asbestos (limited, triple-bagged, only at Menomonee Falls center)

🚫 Not Accepted at MMSD Sites

  • Latex paint → let dry completely, then place in garbage. Add kitty litter to speed drying.
  • Single-use alkaline batteries → can go in regular garbage (per Wisconsin DNR)
  • Business or commercial waste
  • Explosives, ammunition
  • Radioactive materials
  • Medical or biomedical waste
💡 Alkaline batteries can go in the trash in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources states that single-use alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V) currently have little recycling value and may be placed in regular household garbage in Wisconsin. Rechargeable batteries and button cell batteries should still go to MMSD HHW collection.
Missed Pickup

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Milwaukee

  1. Check your collection point and cart placement. Is your cart at the curb line or alley line (whichever applies to your address)? Was it out by 7:00 a.m.? Did it have 3 feet of clearance on all sides with a clear, snow-free path? ASL truck addresses: was the lid opening toward the street?
  2. Confirm your correct collection day and recycling week. Use the schedule lookup at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/schedules. Verify whether a holiday shifted your date. If a weather event recently occurred (like the March 16, 2026 suspension), leave carts out and wait for DPW to announce resumption.
  3. For bulk items: verify stickers are attached if required (mattresses, appliances, electronics). Items over 1 cubic yard need a special arrangement with DPW.
  4. Report the missed pickup by the end of the next business day by calling 414-286-CITY (414-286-2489) or submitting a service request at city.milwaukee.gov/311. After 1 business day, the makeup collection window may close.

Milwaukee Trash & Recycling Tips Every Resident Should Know

🏠 New to Milwaukee or Just Moved In?

Use the official schedule lookup at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/schedules to find your garbage day, recycling week (A or B), and whether your collection point is the curb or alley. Sign up for Sanitation Notifications (through a city.milwaukee.gov account) to receive an automatic alert the day before each collection. Both carts should already be at your address — call 414-286-2489 if missing. Note: Project Clean & Green zone dates are not released until mid-March each year.

⛄️ Milwaukee Winter — Snow, Ice & Collection

  • Milwaukee averages over 45 inches of snow per year. Collection was suspended citywide on March 16, 2026 due to snow and ice control operations.
  • Keep a shoveled path from your home to your collection point. Carts blocked by snow or ice will be skipped — this is not considered a missed pickup by the City.
  • Remove snow and ice from the top and around your carts on collection days. Carts frozen to the ground may be skipped.
  • During winter, recycling collection may be temporarily suspended or delayed. Always check the schedule lookup for your updated next recycling date.

🚫 5 Mistakes Milwaukee Residents Make

  • Setting carts out before 6:00 p.m. the prior evening — City ordinance violation; carts must not appear before the permitted time
  • Leaving carts at the collection point after 10:00 p.m. on collection day — another ordinance violation
  • Placing a mattress or appliance curbside without a prepaid disposal sticker — item will be left and may result in a violation notice
  • Putting recyclables in bags inside the blue cart — bags jam equipment; loose only
  • Not checking their Project Clean & Green date in mid-March — zone dates are only available then, and missing your week means waiting until next year

Frequently Asked Questions — Milwaukee Trash Pickup

Your garbage collection day depends on your address. Use the Collection Day Finder above, the address lookup at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/GarbageRecyclingSchedules, or call 414-286-CITY (414-286-2489). Garbage is collected weekly; recycling is every other week on the same day. Your collection point is either the curb line or the alley line — confirmed in the schedule lookup. Sign up for Sanitation Notifications to receive automatic alerts the day before each collection.
Every other week. Blue cart recycling is collected on the same day as garbage, alternating between Week A and Week B. Use the address lookup at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/schedules to confirm your week and see your next recycling date. During weather-related suspensions, your recycling week may shift — always verify in the schedule lookup after any service disruption.
Project Clean & Green is Milwaukee’s annual spring bulk item collection program, where each zone gets one designated week to set out up to 6 cubic yards of unwanted items for free pickup — without prepaid stickers for most items. The 2026 program starts April 21 with different zones each week. Your zone date becomes available in mid-March in the schedule lookup. Yard waste must be in brown paper bags. Note: prepaid stickers are still required for mattresses, appliances, and electronics even during Clean & Green.
Yes. When your regular collection day falls on a City-observed holiday, collection shifts one day later for the rest of that week. Monday holidays (MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day) shift all routes Mon–Fri one day later. 2026 holidays with delays include: New Year’s Day (Jan 1, Thu), MLK Day (Jan 19, Mon), Presidents’ Day (Feb 16, Mon), Memorial Day (May 25, Mon), Labor Day (Sep 7, Mon), Veterans’ Day (Nov 11, Wed), Thanksgiving (Nov 26, Thu), and Christmas Day (Dec 25, Fri). Independence Day falls on Saturday — no weekday impact. Always verify in the schedule lookup during holiday weeks.
Yes. Mattresses and box springs require a prepaid disposal sticker in Milwaukee. The sticker must be attached to the item before placement at the collection point. The same applies to large appliances (washers, dryers, fridges, AC units) and electronics (TVs, computers). Call 414-286-CITY (414-286-2489) for current sticker prices and locations. Stickers are also required during Project Clean & Green week — the spring program does not waive the sticker requirement for these items.
Place clean, empty, dry, and loose in the blue cart: paper (newspaper, magazines, books, shredded paper in sealed paper bag), cardboard (flattened), cartons, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, rigid plastic containers, and empty aerosol cans. Never put in: plastic bags, Styrofoam, food or liquids, electronics, batteries, or tanglers. Use Milwaukee’s free Recycling Directory at city.milwaukee.gov/recycle/what/Recycling-Directory to look up any specific item.
Your collection point (where to place your carts) is either the curb line or the alley line, depending on your specific address. Both your garbage and recycling carts go to the same collection point. Check your collection point in the schedule lookup at city.milwaukee.gov/sanitation/schedules by entering your address. If you’re unsure, call 414-286-CITY. Some addresses also use ASL (Automated Side Loader) trucks — if yours does, the lid must open toward the street and the handle must face your home.
Use MMSD’s Home Hazmat Collection program: 3 permanent sites plus 1-day events throughout 2026 for Milwaukee County residents. First confirmed 2026 event: MLK Jr. School, April 18, 2026. Accepts oil-based paint, motor oil, pesticides, solvents, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and more. Note: latex paint is NOT accepted — let it dry completely, then place in garbage. Single-use alkaline batteries can also go in regular garbage per Wisconsin DNR. Visit mmsd.com/home-hazmat-collection for all locations and the 2026 event schedule.
Report by the end of the next business day by calling 414-286-CITY (414-286-2489) or submitting at city.milwaukee.gov/311. After 1 business day, the makeup window may close. First check that your cart was at the correct collection point (curb or alley) by 7 a.m. with 3 feet of clearance and a clear snow-free path. During weather suspensions (like March 16, 2026), leave carts out and wait for DPW’s official resumption announcement before reporting.
