Three-Cart System

Brown, Blue & Green Carts — How Fort Worth Collection Works

Fort Worth uses a three-stream curbside system: brown cart for garbage, blue cart for recycling, and green cart / paper bags / bundled brush for yard trimmings. Garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings are collected weekly on the same day.

🗑

Brown Cart — Garbage

All trash must be bagged and placed inside the brown garbage cart. Lid must close fully.

Collected once per week.

Weekly • Bag all trash

Blue & Green Carts

Blue cart for weekly recycling. Green cart or paper bags / tied bundles for weekly yard trimmings and brush.

Collected weekly.

Weekly • Same day as trash

⏰ Core Set-Out Rules

  • Set all carts and materials out by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
  • You may place carts at the curb after 6:00 p.m. the night before pickup.
  • Place the cart in front of your own address, a few inches from the curb, not in the street.
  • For brown garbage carts, the handle faces the house and the serial number faces the street.
  • Retrieve carts from the curb by midnight on pickup day.
Set-Out Rules

Fort Worth Cart Placement & Set-Out Rules

Fort Worth collection is address-specific and placement matters. Carts set at the wrong address or across the street may not be collected. Overfilled carts, extra loose bags, or contaminated piles can also lead to missed pickup or added fees.

📍 For Weekly Cart Collection

Place carts in front of your own address by 7 a.m. with lids fully closed.

Do not place carts at adjacent addresses or across the street.

📦 For Bulk Waste

Set bulk piles out by 7 a.m. Monday of your assigned week.

Bulk piles must be at least 2 feet away from fences, trees, mailboxes, meters, and other obstructions.

💡 Best move for new residents: use the official Fort Worth waste app or schedule pages to confirm your weekly day and monthly bulk week before putting anything out.

  • Mail, newspaper, mixed paper
  • Cereal boxes, pasta/rice boxes, cartons
  • Plastic bottles, jugs, and containers

⚠ Do not bag your recyclables. Fort Worth specifically says no plastic bags in the blue cart, and no bags of recyclables. Everything should go in loose.
Yard Trimmings

Fort Worth Yard Trimmings & Brush Collection

Fort Worth collects yard trimmings and brush weekly, separately from garbage. Material can be placed in the optional green yard cart, in paper yard bags, or as tied brush bundles and properly stacked limbs.

🌿 Yard Waste Rules

  • Paper yard bags have a 40-pound limit.
  • Roll the top closed — do not staple or tape the paper bag shut.
  • There is no limit on the number of paper yard bags you may set out.
  • Tied bundles must be no more than 4 feet long and weigh no more than 40 pounds.
  • Individual limbs up to 8 feet long and 4 inches in diameter are allowed when stacked correctly at the curb.

🚪 What Not to Mix In

No plastic bags, garbage, bulk items, stumps, or root balls in brush piles. Root balls and stumps up to 18 inches diameter may go in the bulk waste pile instead.

💡 Optional yard cart: Fort Worth offers a 96-gallon green yard cart for a one-time fee, but you can also continue using paper yard bags and tied bundles.
