Detroit Waste Collection — Quick Facts
Detroit provides weekly trash, recycling, bulk waste, and seasonal yard waste pickup. Since June 2024, these services have been collected weekly instead of biweekly. Residents can confirm their exact collection day by using the City’s official Waste Pickup Schedule tool.
Detroit Trash, Recycling, Bulk & Yard Waste — How It Works
Detroit’s residential curbside system includes weekly household trash, weekly curbside recycling, weekly bulk pickup, and weekly yard waste during the seasonal yard waste period. Your exact route day depends on your address and can be Monday through Friday.

- Set all material at the curbline in front of your own home.
- Do not place material in front of another home, vacant lot, or neighboring property.
- Set items out after 6:00 p.m. the evening before collection and by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
- Remove containers from the curb after collection.
- For missed service on your collection day, contact your assigned hauler first; after service day, call DPW.
Detroit Curbline Set-Out Rules
Detroit requires residents to place all material in front of their own property and keep different waste streams separated so crews can collect safely and efficiently.
📍 Placement Rules
Trash, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste should be placed at the curbline in front of your own home.
Do not intermingle bulk items with yard waste, recycling, or regular trash.
⚠ Timing Rules
Set out no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before and no later than 7 a.m. on pickup day.
Late set-outs may not be collected until your next scheduled service day.
Detroit Holiday Garbage Schedule 2026
Detroit collection is pushed back one day following these observed holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. If the holiday falls on Monday, Friday routes move to Saturday that week.

Detroit Recycling — What’s Accepted
Detroit offers free weekly curbside recycling to single-family homes and residential buildings with 1–4 units. Recycling should be placed loose in the cart — never in plastic bags. Containers should be empty, clean, and dry.

🚪 Need a Recycling Cart?

Detroit Yard Waste Collection 2026
Detroit’s 2026 yard waste season runs from March 30 through December 19. Yard waste is collected weekly on your scheduled collection day during this period.
🌿 Yard Waste Rules
- Accepted: leaves, grass clippings, shrubs, and small twigs.
- Use biodegradable paper bags or a personal container clearly labeled “yard waste” on two sides.
- Branches and twigs should be bundled and tied securely.
- Bundles must be up to 4 feet long; small twigs/leaves should follow City bagging guidance.
- No plastic bags for yard waste.
Detroit Bulk Pickup Rules
Detroit collects bulk items weekly on your scheduled service day. Bulk items should be placed at the curbline away from trash containers, recycling, and yard waste.

- Place bulk items at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before pickup and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day.
- Keep bulk separate from trash, yard waste, and recycling.
- Do not exceed 2 cubic yards total or 1,000 pounds.
- Each item, bag, or bundle should stay within Detroit’s posted size and weight guidance.

Detroit Free Citizen Bulk Drop-Off Centers
Detroit residents with proper ID can use City drop-off centers for bulk waste and certain other materials, subject to limits. Residents are generally limited to 1,000 pounds or 1 cubic yard per person per day at citizen drop-off centers.

Detroit states that electronics, light bulbs, and batteries are not accepted at Recycle Here! These should go to the Household Hazardous Waste facility at 2000 E. Ferry.
