Dallas Waste Collection — Quick Facts
The City of Dallas provides weekly residential garbage collection, weekly recycling collection, and monthly brush and bulky item collection for eligible customers. Garbage and recycling use roll carts, while brush and bulky items are collected up to 10 cubic yards once per month. Single-family homes and duplexes are the main residential customers served directly by City Sanitation.
Gray Garbage Cart & Blue Recycle Cart — How Dallas Collection Works
Dallas uses automated roll-cart service for both garbage and recycling. Garbage must be bagged and placed inside the gray cart. Recycling goes in the blue cart loose, without bags. Both are generally collected on the same weekday for your address.
Gray Roll Cart — Garbage
All regular household trash should be bagged and contained inside the cart. No bags on top or beside the cart.
Collected once per week.
Weekly • Bagged trash onlyBlue Roll Cart — Recycling
Recyclables go directly into the blue cart. No plastic bags, no boxes stacked on top, and no side pile-outs.
Collected once per week.
Weekly • Loose materials only⏰ Set-Out Rules — Garbage & Recycling
- Place your roll cart at the normal pickup location by 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
- Do not place carts out earlier than 6:00 p.m. the evening before.
- Allow at least 3 feet of clearance on the sides from obstructions.
- Garbage must be bagged and fully inside the gray cart.
- Bring carts back in no later than 8:00 a.m. the day after collection.
Dallas Collection Point — Curbside or Approved Alleyways
Dallas collection may happen from the curb or from approved alleyways, depending on your address. Garbage and recycling must be placed in the same normal collection location assigned to your property.
📌 Placement Basics
- Place roll carts facing the point of collection.
- Keep carts clear of fences, meters, poles, shrubs, utility boxes, and vehicles.
- Approved alley service still exists in some areas, but the City is reviewing safety-related alley-to-curb transitions in selected locations.
- If you are unsure whether your address is curbside or alley service, use the official schedule tool or Dallas app.
Dallas Weekly Recycling — Same Day as Garbage
Dallas residential recycling is collected once per week. Your blue roll cart is picked up on the same day and in the same location as your gray garbage cart. If you do not already have a blue recycling cart, you can request one through 311 at no extra cost.
🔵 Single-Family Homes & Duplexes
The City is the exclusive recycling provider for single-family homes and duplexes in Dallas.
Weekly collection applies to addresses enrolled in standard City residential service.
🟢 Multi-Family & Other Properties
Some multi-family properties may receive City recycling service or use an authorized private hauler.
Residents in apartments and condos should confirm service type with management or Dallas Sanitation.
Dallas Holiday Garbage Schedule 2026
Dallas does not suspend service for every city holiday. The City publishes specific holiday advisories when service changes. For many holidays, garbage, recycling, and even brush & bulky collection continue as normal; for the most affected holiday weeks, routes may shift one day later, with Friday routes collected on Saturday.
| Holiday / Week | Typical Dallas Impact | Garbage & Recycling | Brush & Bulky |
|---|---|---|---|
| MLK Day / many Monday holidays | Often normal service | Usually Normal | Often Normal |
| Thanksgiving week | Commonly modified | Thu to Fri / Fri to Sat | Often As Scheduled |

Dallas Blue Cart — What’s Accepted
Dallas accepts the major curbside categories in the blue roll cart: plastic, glass, cartons, metal, paper, and cardboard. Everything goes in the same cart, but the materials should be placed loose — never bagged.
✅ Accepted in the Blue Cart
- Plastic bottles and containers #1–7
- Glass bottles and jars of any color
- Refrigerated and shelf-stable cartons
- Aluminum, tin, and steel containers
- Office paper, magazines, catalogs, paperback books, phone books, brown paper bags
- Shipping boxes, cereal boxes, paper egg cartons, and drink cartons
🚫 Never in the Blue Cart
- Plastic bags or plastic film
- Styrofoam products
- Chemical containers
- Window glass, mirrors, ceramics, Pyrex, or light bulbs
- Metal hangers, car parts, or electronics
- Shredded paper, waxed cardboard, pizza boxes, or food-contaminated boxes
🚩 Dallas Recycling Tips
Break down cardboard boxes to save space. If you need to transport recyclables, paper bags or old cardboard boxes are better than plastic bags because they can go into the cart with the recyclables.
Dallas Yard Waste, Leaves & Brush Rules
Dallas handles much of its yard debris through the monthly brush and bulky item program. Vegetative waste includes tree limbs, shrubbery, and bagged grass clippings and leaves. Materials should be set out during your designated brush and bulky week, not mixed into the gray garbage roll cart.
🌿 Brush & Vegetative Waste Rules
- Tree limbs and shrubbery are accepted if individual pieces do not exceed 8 inches in diameter or 10 feet in length.
- Bagged grass clippings and leaves are accepted when properly tied and placed curbside.
- Brush and bulky items must be placed just behind the curb line in front of your home.
- Do not mix household garbage or regular recyclables into the brush pile.
🎄 Seasonal Note
During heavy trimming seasons or after storms, set-outs can get larger. Dallas still applies the standard volume rules unless you request the one-time annual oversized exception in advance.
Dallas Brush & Bulky Pickup — Monthly Collection Week
Dallas provides monthly brush and bulky item curbside collection of up to 10 cubic yards for residential customers. Set materials out between Thursday and Sunday before your scheduled collection week. Your exact week depends on your address.
📅 How Brush & Bulky Pickup Works
- Find your assigned monthly collection week using the Dallas schedule lookup or app.
- Set materials out between Thursday and Sunday before that Monday collection week.
- Place all materials just behind the curb, not in the street or alley.
- Keep total set-out within 10 cubic yards unless you have requested the annual oversized exception.
✅ Accepted Brush & Bulky Items
- Tree limbs, shrubs, bagged leaves, and grass clippings
- Household furniture
- Carpet
- Mattresses
- Toilets, bicycles, and toys
- Stoves, washers, dryers, and water heaters
🚫 Not Accepted Curbside
- Household garbage or bagged trash that fits in the roll cart
- Construction or demolition debris
- Auto parts or tires
- Dirt, soil, sod, roofing, shingles, paint, or chemicals
- Electronics
- Appliances containing coolant, gas, or chemicals
💰 Oversize or Non-Compliant Set-Outs
Dallas may automatically bill customers for oversize, early, or non-compliant brush and bulky set-outs. Collection fees can apply in addition to code enforcement action or citations.
Dallas Electronics, HHW & Disposal Sites
Dallas does not accept electronics, hazardous chemicals, batteries, paint, or similar special items in regular curbside garbage, recycling, or brush and bulky collection. These materials must go through the appropriate disposal or drop-off channels.
⏰ Special Disposal Notes
- Electronics such as computers and TVs should be taken to a designated City disposal or e-cycling location.
- Batteries, oil, cleaning products, paint, and antifreeze are not allowed in the gray roll cart.
- Dallas transfer stations and landfill services may help with certain self-hauled materials depending on type and location.
✅ Better Next Step
- Use Dallas disposal sites for eligible self-haul items
- Use e-cycling or special collection options for electronics
- Check the City guidance before hauling chemicals or special waste
🚫 Never in Regular Collection
- Electronics in brush & bulky piles
- Hazardous liquids or chemicals in the gray cart
- Paints, solvents, or fuel-based items
- Appliances containing coolant in curbside bulky pickup
📍 Dallas Disposal Locations Mentioned in City Guidance
City recycling and FAQ resources reference the McCommas Bluff Landfill and City transfer stations including Fair Oaks, Bachman, and Oak Cliff / Westmoreland for certain self-hauled materials and electronics options.
Dallas Food Waste & Composting
Dallas promotes food waste reduction, reuse, and composting, but the City does not currently present a general citywide residential curbside food scrap collection program like its weekly recycling service. Instead, Dallas provides composting education, food waste guidance, and pilot efforts in selected areas.
🌿 Best Current Approach
- Reduce wasted food at home where possible.
- Reuse food safely when appropriate.
- Compost kitchen scraps through backyard composting or other local compost options.
Dallas highlights composting as a practical way to reduce organics sent to landfill.
What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Dallas
- Check your set-out time. Roll carts must be out by 7:00 a.m.. Late carts are not collected until the following week.
- Check for a holiday advisory. Dallas only modifies some holiday weeks, not all of them.
- Verify placement. The cart must be in the correct curb or approved alley location and not blocked.
- Make sure garbage was bagged and inside the cart or that recycling was loose and compliant.
- Report the missed pickup if your cart was still not serviced by 8:00 p.m. on your collection day.

🧤 Brush & Bulky Is Not Weekly
Dallas brush and bulky pickup is monthly, not weekly. Many new residents confuse it with their weekly garbage day and set items out too early or on the wrong week.
🚫 5 Mistakes Dallas Residents Make
- Putting garbage bags on top of or beside the gray cart
- Bagging recyclables instead of placing them loose in the blue cart
- Setting brush and bulky items out outside the allowed Thursday-Sunday window
- Mixing construction debris or electronics into the bulky pile
- Not checking whether their address is curbside or approved alley service
