Two-Container System

Toledo’s Two-Container System — Gray & Blue

Every Toledo residential address receives two containers: a gray refuse container for garbage (weekly) and a blue recycling container (every other week). Both are picked up on the same weekday. All trash must be bagged inside the gray container. All recyclables must be loose and clean in the blue container — never bag your recyclables.

🗑

Gray Container — Garbage

All non-recyclable household waste. Bag and tie all trash before placing inside. Can be set out the night before pickup.

Weekly • Republic Services

Blue Container — Recycling

Paper, cardboard, metal cans, plastic containers (1,2,4,5,7), glass bottles & jars, cartons. Loose, clean, dry. Never bagged.

Every other week • Same day as trash

⏰ Set-Out Rules — Both Containers

  • Containers can be set out the night before your scheduled pickup day.
  • Bring containers back promptly after collection is complete.
  • All trash must be bagged and placed inside the gray container — no loose debris.
  • Recyclables must be loose, clean, and dry in the blue container — never bag them.
  • If you need help getting containers to the curb (Trash Assistance Program), call Republic Services at 419-936-2511 to request an application.

Recycling — Blue Container

Toledo Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Container

Toledo uses single-stream recycling collected every other week by Republic Services on the same day as your trash. All items must be clean and free of food remnants, placed loose — never in plastic bags. Use the free LC Recycles app (Lucas County Solid Waste Management District) to look up any item.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Container

  • Paper: newspapers, magazines, flattened cardboard boxes, unwanted mail, office paper
  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Plastic containers: bottles, jugs, tubs — plastics #1, 2, 4, 5, and 7
  • Glass bottles and jars — all colors, rinsed
  • Cartons: milk, juice, soup (rinsed and flattened)

🚫 Never in the Blue Container

  • Plastic bags or film → store drop-off or Clean Toledo Center
  • Food or food-soiled items → gray garbage container
  • Yard waste or grass clippings → Clean Toledo events or mulching
  • Electronics → Clean Toledo Center or Lucas County SWMD
  • Clothing or textiles → donate or textile drop-off
  • Styrofoam → Clean Toledo Center
  • Plastic #3 or #6 (PVC, polystyrene)
💡 LC Recycles App — look up any item instantly. Download the free LC Recycles app (iOS and Android) from the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District. Search any item to find out if it goes in your curbside bin, at a drop-off location, or at a special event. Also features an interactive recycling game.
Bulk Pickup — New 2026

Toledo Weekly Bulk Pickup — New Policy Starting January 2026

Beginning January 5, 2026, Toledo residents can place up to 5 bulk items at the curb every week alongside regular trash — with no scheduling required. This replaces the previous monthly scheduled bulk pickup that ended December 30, 2025. Items must weigh under 40 lbs each.

📦 How Weekly Bulk Pickup Works

  1. Place up to 5 bulk items at the curb on your regular trash collection day. No need to call or schedule in advance.
  2. Each item or bundle must weigh under 40 lbs. Items over 40 lbs will be left behind.
  3. Bag all loose trash. Tie branches, wood, or rugs in a 3’ × 4’ bundle.
  4. Remove or pound flat any nails or screws in wood items before setting out.
  5. Bag or wrap mattresses before placing at the curb.
  6. Note: No alley or side street pickup — items must be at the front curb only.

✅ Accepted Bulk Items

  • Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers (under 40 lbs each)
  • Mattresses and box springs (bagged or wrapped)
  • Small appliances (under 40 lbs)
  • Bundled wood, branches, or scrap lumber (nails removed/flattened)
  • Rugs and carpeting (bundled in 3’ × 4’ rolls)
  • Up to 5 items per week — no scheduling needed

🚫 Not Accepted as Bulk Curbside

  • Items or bundles over 40 lbs (will be left behind)
  • Loose, unbagged, or unbundled debris
  • Tires → Clean Toledo events ($0.50 each)
  • Hazardous waste, gas, paint, liquids, medical waste → HHW events
  • Major car parts or automotive components
  • Commercial construction material
  • Boards with exposed nails or screws
⚠ Items left improperly may result in a fine. Items that do not meet guidelines will be left at the curb, and residents may be fined. No pickup from alleys or side streets — only from the front curb. For large items over 40 lbs, use the Hoffman Road Landfill Free Disposal Days or Block-by-Block neighborhood cleanup events.
