Set-Out Rules & Carts

Las Vegas Set-Out Rules & Cart Sizes

Republic Services provides three cart sizes for garbage: 35-gallon, 65-gallon, and 95-gallon. Your monthly rate is determined by the cart size you choose. Recycling carts are provided at no additional charge. Contact Republic Services at (702) 735-5151 to request a different cart size or to report a damaged cart.

⏰ Set-Out Rules — Critical in Las Vegas Heat

  • Place all carts at the curb by 5:00 a.m. on your collection day. In summer months (May–October), trucks often start very early to avoid extreme heat — setting carts out the evening before is strongly recommended.
  • You may set carts out the evening before collection. Keep them on your property until the evening before your collection day.
  • Cart lids must be fully closed. Overfilled carts or carts with open lids may not be collected.
  • Keep carts at least 4 feet apart from each other, from parked vehicles, mailboxes, utility meters, and overhanging tree branches.
  • Only items inside the provided carts are collected during regular service. Bags, boxes, or additional items placed outside the carts will not be picked up during a regular collection — this includes any extra trash bags placed beside the garbage cart.
  • Carts must be stored off the street between collections — not left at the curb permanently.
⚠ Nothing outside the cart during regular collection. Republic Services will only collect what is inside your cart during regular garbage and recycling service. Bags or boxes placed beside the cart will be left. The only exception is during scheduled bulk item collection — see the Bulk section below.
Holiday Schedule

Las Vegas Holiday Collection Schedule 2026

Sign up for email or text notifications through your Republic Services account to receive automatic alerts before holiday weeks.
Recycling — Blue Cart

Las Vegas Recycling — What Goes in the Blue Cart

Las Vegas uses single-stream recycling in the blue cart — all accepted recyclables go in together, no sorting required. Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as garbage. Items must be empty, clean, and dry, placed loose — never in bags. Republic Services processes all recyclables at its Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Southern Nevada.

✅ Accepted in the Blue Recycling Cart

  • Paper: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office paper, phone books
  • Cardboard: corrugated boxes (flattened), cereal boxes, paperboard — dry only
  • Cartons: milk, juice, soup, broth cartons
  • Aluminum and steel (tin) cans — rinsed
  • Glass: bottles and jars (all colors) — rinsed
  • Rigid plastic bottles and containers — rinsed

🚫 Never in the Blue Cart

  • Plastic bags or plastic film → retail store drop-off
  • Styrofoam / polystyrene of any kind
  • Food, liquids, or food-soiled containers
  • Electronics or batteries → HHW drop-off locations
  • Tanglers: cords, hoses, wire hangers
  • Construction debris or yard waste
  • Any recyclables in bags — remove from bags first
💡 Track My Truck for real-time updates. Republic Services offers a Track My Truck feature through their app (iOS/Android) and website. On your collection day, you can see your truck’s real-time location and estimated arrival time on your street. This is especially useful during summer months when trucks start very early. Sign up for a free Republic Services account at republicservices.com to access this feature.
Bulk Item Pickup

Las Vegas Bulk Item Pickup — Weekly Service

Republic Services provides bulk item collection every week on the same day as your regular garbage. Bulk items are large items that do not fit in the standard garbage cart. Check your specific address schedule at republicservices.com/schedule to confirm your exact bulk pickup day and any address-specific rules — some areas have biweekly rather than weekly bulk.

📌 Bulk Item Set-Out Rules

  • Place bulk items at the curb by 5:00 a.m. on your scheduled bulk collection day. Do not place items on private property — curb placement only.
  • Items must be no longer than 6 feet in any dimension.
  • Upholstered furniture (sofas, chairs, ottomans) must be wrapped in plastic to prevent moisture damage and pest issues in the desert climate.
  • Mattresses and box springs must also be completely wrapped in plastic — a requirement strictly enforced in Clark County.
  • Only one major appliance per bulk service day. Appliances containing Freon (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners) require a separate scheduled appointment — call (702) 735-5151 — and a fee may apply for Freon removal.
  • Tree branches must be cut and bundled. No loose piles of yard debris.

✅ Accepted Bulk Items

  • Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers (wrapped in plastic)
  • Mattresses and box springs (wrapped in plastic)
  • Non-Freon appliances: washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers
  • Freon appliances: only with separate scheduled appointment
  • TVs and flat-screen monitors
  • Rugs and carpeting (rolled)
  • Clean lumber and doors
  • Bundled tree branches (max 6 ft)

🚫 Not Accepted in Bulk

  • Electronics → HHW drop-off locations (see below)
  • Tires → tire retailers; Republic Services dumpster rental (fee)
  • Hazardous materials (paint, chemicals) → HHW drop-off
  • Batteries of any kind → HHW drop-off
  • Construction or demolition debris → dumpster rental
  • Unwrapped upholstered furniture or mattresses
  • Items longer than 6 feet
⚠ Mattresses and upholstered furniture MUST be wrapped in plastic. This is strictly enforced in Las Vegas. An unwrapped mattress or sofa at the curb may be left uncollected. Use heavy-duty plastic sheeting or a mattress bag (available at hardware stores and U-Haul). This rule protects sanitation workers and prevents bed bug spread — a significant concern in a high-tourism, high-transient population city like Las Vegas.

What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Collected in Las Vegas

  1. Confirm your correct collection day. Use the address lookup at republicservices.com/schedule or the Republic Services app. Verify whether your recycling is due this week (A or B week). Check if bulk service is listed for your address calendar.
  2. Check for a holiday delay. Republic Services observes 6 holidays with delays. Verify at republicservices.com/schedule or through the app for your address-specific holiday impact.
  3. Verify set-out rules: carts out by 5:00 a.m., lid fully closed, 4 feet from all obstacles, on the curb (not in a private driveway). Nothing outside the cart is collected during regular service.
  4. Use Track My Truck in the Republic Services app to confirm whether your truck has already passed. In summer, trucks can arrive before 5:30 a.m.
  5. Report the missed pickup within 24 hours by calling (702) 735-5151 or through your Republic Services online account or app. Reporting after 24 hours may mean a delayed or missed return trip. If you need to escalate, contact the City of Las Vegas Franchise Administration.

☀ Las Vegas Extreme Heat (May–October)

  • Summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F (43°C). Republic Services crews start routes very early to finish before peak heat. Trucks can arrive as early as 5:00–5:30 a.m.
  • Always set your carts out the evening before (after you get home from work) rather than early morning during summer months. Waiting until morning risks missing the truck.
  • Keep cart lids closed at all times — the desert heat dramatically accelerates decomposition and insect activity in open carts.
  • Use Track My Truck to know when your truck is approaching your street.
  • During extreme heat advisories (above 115°F), Republic Services may modify routes for driver safety. Monitor your Republic Services account or app for service alerts.

🚫 5 Mistakes Las Vegas Residents Make

  • Placing mattresses or upholstered furniture at the curb without wrapping them in plastic — strictly required; unwrapped items may be left
  • Putting recyclables in bags inside the blue cart — loose only; bags jam the MRF sorting equipment
  • Not checking the holiday schedule by address — Las Vegas has 6 holidays with delays, and impacts vary by zone
  • Placing extra bags beside the garbage cart during regular collection — only items inside the cart are collected; extra bags will be left

Republic Services provides weekly bulk item collection on the same day as regular garbage (some areas are biweekly — verify by address). Mattresses and upholstered furniture in Las Vegas must be completely wrapped in plastic before curbside placement. This is a strictly enforced local requirement. Unwrapped mattresses or sofas may be left at the curb and will not be collected. Use a mattress bag or heavy-duty plastic sheeting from any hardware or moving supply store.

Never put in: plastic bags, Styrofoam, food or liquids, electronics, batteries, tanglers, or construction materials. Extra bags placed beside the cart during regular collection will not be picked up.
